What DBZ lacks in a inovative, and original story, it makes up for in an exceptional amount of well placed suspence. Every series has the same pattern, which in my opinion gets very annoying. A strong evil force threatens the earth, (or some other planet,) and the Z fighters challenge him, or her, to deffend their beloved planet. Of coarse they are usually no match for that force, and it comes down to goku fighting, and after a long strugled, and multiply delayed fight, goku will pull off a victory. If somehow this is a spoiler, don't lose sleep over it. Although this sounds bad, for some reason, you will always be addicted enough to watch the next episode, so it's doing something right.
The animation of DBZ can be looked at in two ways. Sure it looks old fashioned at times, but the character designs are deffinatly above average. Especially when some of the characters a super sayan. With the same ordeal, the setting animation is downright pour, and sadly there isn't any great character animation to save it. Combined together, there are some pretty nice fight scenes that envolves this pour setting animation being destroyed. So I guess it all works out good in the end. Back to the fight scenes, it seems like all of the animation is boosted up 2 fold during them. The characters look more detailed, and everything runs smoothly. Lastly, when this series first starts out the animation was pretty bad, considering it was just getting over its previous series' animation. But by the end of the series, the animation is significantly better by a long shot.
The characters are one of my favorite parts in this series. Whiney, yet courages Gohan, Friendly Krillen, Mean Spirrited Picalo, Confused Trunks, and thats without even mentioning Bad-Assed Goku. The villens of the show are very good at what they are. Some of them are so annoying that you will find yourself shouting at the screen cheering for the losing good guy. One of the coolest thing about the characters in the show are thier power levels. Some fanatics of the show become so obsessed with these poer levels, that they memorize everyone's level at every point in the series. It's just alittle something extra and cool.
Probably one of the largest downside to this show is the pourly translated music. (In the US Series at the most.) The music playlist really comes down to the same theme / end song, played over and over again, in multiple, closly related versions.IT's absolutly nothing special. The sound effects are allright. The majority of sound effects are a looping track of punches, and some cool explosions, but it's easy to see that there wasn't too much effort put into it. Lastly is the voice acting which at times can be good, usually during the important parts of the story, and at other times it can be not so good. In my opinion, I prefer Goku's japanese voice becuase that girly, screaming, fast-forwarded voice always gives me a laugh. ^_^
Lastly is the entertainment value of the show, which can be hit or miss. With the way that the story is done, You will always find yourself wanting to see what will happen on the next episode. This is usually due to the fact that every episode moves slower than Yagerobi. (A fat samurai character in the show.) Every episode usually has 4 minutes of actual fighting, and the rest is pointless conversation that is just used to kill time. To give you an idea on how this is true, there are over 350 episodes just in this series!!! So in reality you will find yourself bored watching this show, but you can't help but want to see what will happen. So it's your call.

Final Thought It's a series like no other, which can have mixed emotions. You will either love or hate it. I just can't stand the last 8 episodes, and some of the long boring waits that seem to happen during the middle of each sub-plot. |
