Tenchi Musaki is a young man who is dedicated to school and his chores. He also practices sword fighting with his grandfather. The one thing you would never expect is all of the extremely wierd adventures he gets himself into. The start of it all is when he gets steals his grandfathers legendary sword, and unlocks an extremely old mummy, who turns out to be an atractive young ladie / Ruthless space pirate. But don't worry it all makes lots of sense .... yep, lots of sense. ^_- After Tenchi is introduced to a huge cast of funny girls from space, the series couldn't get any more entertaining. It's like a humerous cartoon Soap opera. The only thing I don't understand is why every girl that Tenchi meets, instantly falls head over heals for him. Oviously this story's greatest downfall is that It has no ending. I don't know if thats just a US thing, but it's a real dissapointment.
Surprisingly this first OAV Series, in my opinion, has the best animation out of any of the three series'. (with the exception of the first two episode.) The setting animation just breaths beauty, and the character animation is probably the most detailed. This leaving the characters looking awfully cool. I could go on and on about this great animation, but I think I'll finish by saying that, for a TV series, Tenchi Muyo has some of the best damn animation on the block. It's just got that perfect anime look to it, and then some. On a different note, Although there are only really 3 fight scenes in the entire series, the animation of the characters are done even better than normal for those scenes. My final thought is that the great animation, in all aspects of this show, makes the show shine brilliantly! And that is no understatement.
You can't mention anything Tenchi Muyo, without thinking about the memorable characters. No matter which way you look at it, it is the funny character conversations, to situations, that just make the show! It's either the Dubbing was done very well, or the conversations were perfectly written from the early birth back in Japan. Probably the funniest part of the show is is back-and-forth fights between Ryoko, and Ayeka, and how Tenchi always somehow gets dragged right into the middle of it. It seems like there is never a dull moment. Once again, this is all due to the amazingly witty dialogue. And Finnaly there is that little cute alien, cat, spaceship, thing, Ryo-Ohki. There is no way that anyone could dislike this cute little furry thing.
This show has a good variety of J-pop Music, and orchistarted music. Although the orchistarted stuff is a bit repetitive, seeings how the same music is used over and over again throughout the series. Normally this wold be a bad thing, but the music is catchy, and perfect for every scene. As For the J-Pop Music, there is a lot of it, but I think we have all heard better. And the US dub music could have been a lot better. The other half of things you will here in this show are the sound effects, which can only be rated as ok. A lot of space ship sounds, and sword swings ... nothing special. Finnaly is the voice acting, which is very very good! When I first heard Tenchi, I was kind of annoyed with his voice, but after watching threw half of the series, I figured out that half the humor of the show comes from tenchi's voice alone. All of the girls voices in the show are perfect for the characters, especially Sasami, and Mihoshi. Also the ladie that does the cat-like voice for Ryo-Ohki is sweet. I was fooled, I didn't think that was human.
As far as entertainment value goes in Tenchi Muyo, (like I said before,) It should be viewed as a humerous cartoon soap opera. The only difference is that this one envolves crazy anime hair styles, as well as sword fights, and lots of space ship chases. So in a way, it's nothing like a soap opera, but you can use your imagination. ^_^ Although there aren't that many action sequences, there are plenty of entertaining episodes that just envolve funny character situations. And those at times can be more entertaining than some of the action sequences. Especially after the second episode when Ryoko, Sasami, and Ayeka all begin to live with Tenchi. the tention levels begin to rise, and everything just gets better. So all in all, This show could keep anyone's interest, AS LONG AS THEY HAVE SEEN MORE THAN ONE EPISODE. This is because you have to get used to the characters, but once you do, you will instantly fall in love with the show. (just like I did.)
Story A decent story, that turns into a great love story, too bad it was unfinished. |

Final Thought Actually my favorite part of the entire Tenchi series. The only downside is that it's only 13 episodes long, and unfinished. It's really a shame. Otherwise it would be an easy 10! |
