Major Motoko Kusanagi, the main character of Ghost in the Shell. Member of the special Security Police Section 9 and an expert in unlawful activities, demolitions and secret intelligence. Origanally worked for a special manuever team for the Ministry of Home Affairs, but now works for Section 9 commanding the team consisting of only herself, Bateau and Togusa. She is second in command of Section 9, second only to Chief Aramaki. Motoko's body is almost completely cybernetic, save for the human brain cells in her titanium shell. She appears to be in her late 20's as a cyborg but is rumoured to have been in her 30's. In her spare time she likes to go diving (Bateau thinks she's crazy for doing it). She knows she's treated like any other human would be but still ponders about her own existance.
