Macross Plus

Macross Plus

heh...I got this one last year, at the suggestion of my boyfriend whom I had only been with for like a month. Now it's a year later (I'm still with him!) and I finally *get* Macross. Ok, when I first saw it, I liked it because Isamu was cute. I hated mecha, and I loved all things shoujo. heh heh, well, a lot can change in a year, right? Well, in the past year I've gotten interested into Robotech/Macross, and now I fully understand Macross Plus.

So the story goes like this: Isamu Dyson is a rough neck Valkyrie pilot with an air for trouble, he knows he'll get into serious trouble if he doesn't fix his ways. Well, one day Isamu crossed the line and was shiped off to a remote planet called Eden to be a test pilot at New Edwards Base. Eden is like Earth, it has animals, though the animals are different, and it's inahbited with people. Isamu arives at Eden and is breifed on what he'll be testing. It seems that there is a contest between two Valkyrie models to win funding and be the main ship of the UNSpacy to repace the VF-Thunderbolt. Isamu is the pilot of the YF-19 and....the other pilot....well, he's Gloud Goa Boaman....a man Isamu was once good friends with. For unknown reasons, the friendship ended. Of course, there are large ammounts of tension between the two.

Also, at the sametime, the computer generated pop Idol, Sharon Apple is in town too. And So is her "manager", Myung Faun Lone, another old friend of Isamu and Gould. The big mystery is why they broke up and what happned to make then break up as friends. Another mystery is the cover up of Sharon Apple's orgins...is she really an AI hologram, or is there someone behind Sharon Apple?

I love this little four part OVA, it's got action, nice on the eyes, and the music...oh god, it's wonderful!Yoko Kanno is like...the music goddess! The directing was really good, the story was compelling and well told. There is nothing NOT to like about Macross Plus. Even the dubbing was excelent! No corny sounding voices, the audio levels were right and all the original dialouge was kept. Whew, Manga Entertainment did a good job! Macross Plus deserves an A++!
