A year later and more knowledge in anime, my Princess Mononoke tape had arrived on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The next day I had finally decided to pop the tape in and give it a whirl.
While at first I was so tottaly lost on the story line, I almost stoped the movie then I began to pay more attention and actually *watch* the movie. It was simply beutiful. The landscape, character desigin, and music all caputred my heart. I fell in love with the way everything flowed, and the strength of the characters. I was particularly taken with how strong, beutiful and just plain cool San was. That girl means business!
I was never a huge fan of Hiyao Miazaki's work, I never liked the plain character desigin and I just never really payed attention to him (at that time I was off in "I love Naoko Takeuchi, she's the best so is Sailor Moon" world) or his work. Then I noticed it was comming out in select theaters, that sparked my interest. But of course, the closest Theater it was showing at was an hour away -_-;;;. So, I got on the fansub bus and found a copy of it (tee hee hee).
I was really impressed by how original the story line was and how long the movie was (2 hours!). I think that the reason behind plain charcater looks is so the viewer can look more closely at the story and not be bombarded by colors and crazy hair. As for the story itself: It's an animal lover, forest-y type movie. Personally, I hate stories like that, but it's not just centered around the forest, but everything ties in. I personally liked the women of Iron Town (argh! I can't remember the japanese name, I can only remember what it means >.<), they where just cool and they didn't take the usual woman role either. Oh yeah, the best of it was the mild romance! YAY! I'm soooo- sick of seeing lovey dovey anime (ie: Fushigi Yuugi, Sailor Moon) where the guy ALWAYS gets the girl and everything is happy and fluffy. This is prolly the first anime I've ever seen that wasn't centered on mindless violence (there *is* some action, but it's cool) and the boy meets girl story.
Princess Mononoke is a great movie to see. It's prefect for that animal lover (esp. wolves and such) in your life or just the casual viewer. It's good for kids (like 9 and up) because it teaches a lesson about taking care of forests and the land and junk. Although some of it maybe little harsh for a kid to understand, it's still kid-friendly. Rating-B+
