Recently (1/24/2000), an individual wrote me to ask for tips on how to draw manga/anime eyes. I thought that it was interesting that someone would ask me for tips since I myself am still learning and since I've never been formally taught to draw. My advice to him--and to everyone else whose interested--is simple: practice. The more you draw, the more likely it is that it'll become second nature to you. You'll also be able to learn, just through exprementing, what techniques work best for whatever you're trying to do. It also helps to familiarize yourself with the subject of what you draw. If you go to your local Borders, Barnes & Nobles, or you can go to Amazon.com, I'm sure you'll find a ton of material on anything that you're looking to draw. I've also come across a good collection of books on illustration in Borders. I think that it's also a good idea to see how other artists (professional or amateur) draw. A lot of my technique and style is derived from the manga and anime that I come across. It's important to see what kind of results you are trying to get and then try to figure out how to do it. I don't think there's anything wrong with imitating a certain artist's style, as long as you use that as a stepping stone to develop your own and not as a cheat. |
