Utena vs. Saionji
The first battle that Utena fought was with Saionji because he posted a love letter that Wakaba had sent him in a public place in order to humiliate her. This unkind act angers Utena, who challenges Saionji to a duel to defend her friend's honor. Although she only indended to fight a kendo duel, Saionji assumes that she is a new Duelist and holds the fight in the Arena. Utena arrives at the base of the Arena, the "forbidden forest" and can't find a way in. Her ring that was given to her by her prince gives her access, and she calmly climbs a whole lot of stairs. (I think I would have found it rather strange.) She watched in amazement as Saionji pulls a rather impressive sword out of Anthy's chest. They begin to duel, but Utena is surprised to discover that Saionji's "trick sword" is actually real. Of course Utena wins, because it wouldn't be much of a story if she had lost and went back to her own little world. Utena defeats him and the Sword of Dios to protect her friend's honor, unwittingly becoming the Victor of the Duel and becoming engaged to the Rose Bride. She also gains Touga's attention, which she can never quite shake.
