Croquettes - Korokke
Croquettes are a deep fried dish. The filling is made of a variety of things; sometimes potatoes, meat, vegetables, or a mixture of the sort. The filling is then rolled in flour, a beaten egg, and breadcrumbs, then deep fried. If you're comfortable with frying with oil at home, croquettes are relatively easy to make!


Curry - Kare
Curry is a stew-like dish that is usually eaten over rice or noodles. Curry contains meat and vegetables and curry (curry is made from curry leaves and a wide variety of spices). I don't know how to describe the flavor of curry, but it has a very distinct taste. Traditional curry is from India and is spicy, but most Japanese curries are sweeter.


Gyoza
Gyoza is a dumpling (also called pot stickers) made with thin dough made of flour and water and a filling which usually consists of meat and seasonings. Gyoza can be steamed or fried.


Rice Balls - Onigiri
Onigiri are made of sticky rice and usually have a small patch of seaweed wrapped on it for easy handling. Some onigiri are even filled with meat or veggies. Onigiri can be formed by hand or made with special onigiri molds. Onigiri are commonly shaped as balls or 3D triangles.


Sashimi
Sashimi refers to raw meat, whether its seafood, chicken, or beef.


Sushi
Sushi may be one of the few Japanese foods that many Americans are somewhat familiar with. The word "sushi" is actually the word for the rice; not the raw fish. Raw fish is called "sashimi". Sushi rice is plain sticky rice combined with vinegar, spices, and sake. Sushi can be filled with vegetables, sashimi, or meat and is usually wrapped in nori (seaweed), but doesn't have to be. Sushi is often served with wasabi and pickled ginger called "gari".
The 3 forms of sushi that seem to be most common are as follows:

- Makizushi - "maki" translates to "roll". Makizushi is the rolled sushi that is cut into smaller slices.

- Temakizushi - temakizushi are the hand roll sushi. They're sugar cone shaped wraps containing sushi rice and meat or veggies, wrapped in nori.

- Nigirizushi - "nigiri" translates to "grip". Nigirizushi is the block sushi that is often topped with sashimi.


Tempura
Tempura is battered and fried vegetables or seafood. The batter is a simple mixture of flour, beaten eggs, and cold water. I always thought tempura was a specific type of food, just a meat or something.


Yakitori
Yakitori are roasted chicken skewers.
