Why Anime?
Why do I prefer anime more than most American stuff (movies, cartoons, music)?
American cartoons are designed for 12 year olds. This means while it may look
cool, it has no depth. While all the storyline, character development, violence
and nudity are saved for live action movies. I prefer most anime over
live-action because of the unrealistic things made possible by animated
characters. After all, ever seen a misty-red blood-spray come outa somebody who
just got sliced in half with one smooth stroke, in real life? ‘Course not ‘cause
it’s nigh unto physically impossible!! While it’s true that there’s a lot of
cool stuff in live action movies (The Matrix, Jet Li movies, John Woo flicks)
these movies still don’t have giant robots. In Japan DBZ is a kids show, but if
any five year olds mother watched a few uncut episodes, she’d probably have
stroke. In Japan however nobody freaks out. Both kids and adult watch anime,
which is why anime has storyline and character development, along with physical
comedy. Tenchi Muyo for example is funny as hell, but not too stupid. Cowboy
Bebop for example, has less overall violence than DBZ but is an older age show,
with some very unusual situations and characters(Grin anyone?). EVA is a
confusing psychological, sacriligious, GIANT ROBOT anime(multi-genre?)! Which
can only be understood by those 16+ but all the main characters are 15! Just
before I got tired of cartoons as too childish, I got back into anime(I say back
into because I watched Robotech when I was younger) and now I own more anime
stuff(shirts, CDs etc) than anything else! Most people think cartoons are for
kids, which is why you’ll occasionally find Can-Can Bunny and Perfect Blue in
the kids sections of your local video store. Most places now have anime sections
(really small ones) but that’s better that nothing…Done. Later...
