Meeting Again, Starting the Journey
I Won't Loose!
Episode 23 begins with Kusanagi's return to
the living. He awakens and wonders what happened and where he is.
Getting up, he wanders out into the main cavern and discovers Susano-oh in
stasis inside the giant mitama. Kusanagi's immediate reaction is to
unsheath his blade with the intention of going after the Aragami god, but
Kaede's voice stops him. She tells him that in three days everything
will be over - when the darkness comes. Kusanagi gets mad and tells her
that she's not making any sense. She is unaffected by his apparent anger
and uses her power to send him into unconsciousness, telling him to sacrifice
his seeds to Susano-oh. Then she whispers to him that soon, they will
protect Japan together. Murakumo is watching in the background and hears
her, and he, too, is angered by her words.
In Tokyo, Kome, Momiji and Yaegashi are scavenging for
generators so that Ms. Matsudaira can continue her ongoing research.
Momiji is very determined now, her fighting spirit once again evident, now
that she knows that Kusanagi is still alive. While she is in
conversation with Kome and Yaegashi, a shadow appears on top of the truck they
are standing next to. Momiji senses it and turns to look, but it's
gone. Before she can think any more about it, they see a government
helicopter overhead and they flee to hide.
Tokyo is being evacuated and makeshift shelters are being
erected. The Prime Minister is worried because they now only have three
days left and they have yet to discover the whereabouts of the Kushinada.
The Prime Minister's secretary informs him that rumors are flying around that
Japan will be destroyed in three days time.
Meanwhile, Sakura is about to have a
conniption. The TAC have set up shop in her apartment and she accuses
them of trashing it. Kunikida asks her if there is any chance that the
US will take action considering all that's going on in Japan. She tells
him that unless the Japanese government specifically requests it, that no
intervention will take place. The talk then turns to the artificial
Kushinada pulse Matsu and Yaegashi are still working feverishly to
complete it, but they still can't get it to work.
Momiji enters the room at this point, ready for more
testing. She wants to do anything and everything possible to help.
But suddenly, she senses something coming. The patio door behind them
explodes and Murakumo enters the room. He tells them he needs a
Kushinada and Kome tries to stop him. He strikes out at her, but
Yaegashi jumps in front of her and Murakumo's sword slices through his
back. Before any of the other TAC members can offer resistance, he grabs
Momiji and flies away.
Murakumo carries her over the city, asking questions about
Kaede's plans, wanting to know exactly what Momiji's sister is up to. He
exclaims that the Aragami should be under his control but they are not, and he
senses Kaede's betrayal. It is confirmed when he sees giant plants
enveloping other Aragami.and he flies down to the underground cavern to
confront Kaede. He threatens Momiji's life, wanting to get some answers,
and Kaede apologizes to him, telling him that what is happening now was
Susano-oh's plan all along. Instead of establishing the Kingdom of the
Aragami, Susano-oh plans to rejuvenate Japan by getting rid of mankind and
returning it to nature.
Feeling completely betrayed and used, Murakumo lashes out
in anger, saying that if his kingdom can never be that he will kill Momiji
now. But before he can strike her down, Kusanagi stops him with a bolt
of energy and Momiji runs to him, elated that he is still alive. Murakumo
recovers from Kusanagi's attack and then tries to kill Kaede, but Momiji jumps
in the way. When she touches her sister, a red light surrounds the two
sisters and a melody begins to play. Both girls seem to be becoming
weaker, and Momiji's mitama falls from her chest.
Kaede calls to Susano-oh and he aims a bolt of energy at
the girls, destroying the Kushinada pulse. Kaede disappears and the
giant mitama begins to grow, causing the cavern to become unstable.
Kusanagi and Momiji try to flee the eroding cavern, but the vines that he is
using to jump on break away and they begin to fall. Before they hit the
bottom, the mitama that Kusanagi holds in his hand begins to glow and they
begin to fly. They make it safely out of the cavern as a giant plant
emerges, and Momiji doesn't understand how they could fly since she lost her
mitama. Kusanagi then shows her that he has it; it's now embedded in his
chest. He tells her that this time, she saved him and he embraces her.
The episode ends with a news report that says the
destruction that is occurring all over Japan can be stopped by the sacrifice
of one girl: Momiji Fujimiya. The TAC realize that they have been
betrayed.
