Episode 1: "In the Name of Science"

Two men in white lab coats stand before a huge ship. One has gray hair and dark shades as the other has blue hair and green eyes. The man in the shades looked up toward the ceiling and says, “It’s funny. My own son would go awol like this. I would think that any child would want the power he was about to receive.”

The man with the blue hair replied, “Well, it is a painful process. Most children wouldn't stick around for that.”

The man in the shades sighed, “If I had thought of it in those terms, I would have never had a son of my own.”

The man with the blue hair gave his partner a strange look,“You mean you had a child solely for this project?”

The man nodded with pride, “In the name of science.”

The man in the blue hair shrugged, “I'm just thankful we acquired another child with whom we could successfully complete our project.”

The man in the shades asked, “Where is she now?”

The blue haired man replied, “In block three of the lab containment cells. She should be ready for the one o'clock test drive today.”

The man in the shades sighed, “I still can't believe we trusted another band of pirates  to build a new model after the first one was stolen. Why not just retrieve it?”

The blue haired man smirked a bit, “You didn't know? Some misfit outlaw made off with it and is basically too tough to catch up with. Also word is going around about the Galactic Leyline in a new location. I still haven't heard exactly what it is, but I know there are many mysteries of the universe there.”

The man in the shaded rubbed his chin with a smirk, “Interesting. I imagine with the new updates to this model, it should be good enough to make the original seem like a waste of time.”

The blue haired man nodded, “You'd better believe it.”

Meanwhile, in a dark, metallic room, a girl sits on the floor, curled up into a ball in the corner, sniffling as tears stream down her face,“Cold....so cold. I want to leave....why won't they let me leave? I want to go home....where ever that is.”

The coldness of the room wrapped around her body with a merciless grip. She began to sneeze as all she had to wear was a blue hospital robe. She wrapped her arms around her body to keep warm. She took a breath and leaned closer against the wall, staring at the big, steel door in front of her. She began to hear footsteps and it made her heart beat faster as each footstep increased in volume, one after the other. She closed her eyes tightly as if someone was about to strike her. She wanted to go home. She wanted her pain to go away. The huge, metallic door before her began to open slowly.

A figure stood in the light coming from the outside,“It's time.”

The girl began to beg, “Please, no more! I can't take anymore...”

The man looked off to his right, “Get me the tranquilizer gun.”

A second voice was shouted, “Yes, sir!”

Then there were exiting footsteps.

The girl shouted as loud a she could, “NOOO!”

*********

Meanwhile, a man wearing a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back, black boots with steel plates, a black shirt and black pants walked down the street with a young, teenage girl wearing blue jeans, black combat boots, a white T-shirt and a denim jacket.

The girl smiled, “Tyler, we should go shopping today. They're having a big sale at Sheila's Shoes and at New Age Fashions! I'll just die if I miss them!”

The older guy, recognized as Tyler, looked at the girl with a blank expression and replied coldly, “What do you want on your tombstone?”

She glared at him with an angered look,“You're so mean! MEANY!”

Tyler sighed, “Look, Ayana. We're broke, end of story. We wouldn't be in this mess if you hadn't bought that stupid computer.”

Ayana glared at Tyler again and snapped back, “For your information, Mr. Tough Guy, if it weren't for that computer, we would have no access to the outside world at all!”

Tyler replied nonchalantly, “Well, there's television and radio, ya know.”

Ayana frowned, “And how the hell am I supposed hack into radios and tv’s, huh?!”

Tyler shook his head,“Look, until one of us gets paid, there's nothin’ we can do. To tell the truth, working at the bar is useless since there's always someone challenging me, breakin’ stuff and it all comes outta my pay.....”

Ayana giggled, “You're the one who decided to try being an outlaw...”

Tyler frowned, “Oh, shut up....”

Suddenly, a girl in a blue hospital gown dashed from around the corner, crashing into Tyler, knocking them both down,“ACK!” Tyler exclaimed as he was plowed to the ground without warning or painlessness.

“Ow...my head,” He rubbed the back of his head, wincing in pain. He opened his eyes to see a frightened young woman, struggling to get up.

Ayana looked at the whole seen and raises an eyebrow,“Hey! This isn't the time or place, lady!”

Suddenly, two men in black, military like suits dash from around the corner and spot the young woman.

She stumbled to her feet, “No! Leave me alone!”

Ayana took a defensive battle stance as she glared at the men, “I don't know who you are, but I won't let you pick on her like that!”

Both men looked at each other, then back at Ayana. Suddenly, they both whipped out special edition Casters. Ayana’s eyes widened.

She thought to herself, “They wouldn't! Casters are too powerful for close range firing!”

One of the men spoke and as if reading Ayana’s mind, “These new model casters are adjustable for any range of combat. Give us the girl or you both fry.”

Tyler stood up, helping up the young woman. She looked at him with a pleading expression on her face. Tyler turned around and faced the men. He noticed a red badge on their armor.

He then thought to himself,  “Second Division Space Forces. Why the hell are they even here? Is he still after me after all this time?” Tyler smirked, “Casters, eh? You guys are so old fashioned.”

One of the men pointed his caster directly at Tyler,“Don't move or I’ll fry you first! Put your hands where I can see em! Both of you!”

Tyler smirked at Ayana,“You heard the man...”

Ayana snuck her hand in and out of her pocket and smiled,“I guess the got us, Ty.”

Suddenly, she dropped a small, blue pill onto the ground. As it hit the ground, it produced a bright flash of light. The men shielded their eyes as they cursed and shot blindly, hoping to hit one of their two targets. When the light diminished, Tyler, Ayana, and the young girl were all gone.

They walked back around the corner to their base,“Damn! What are we gonna tell the boss?”

The other replied, “I guess all we can do is tell the truth and hope we don't get punished severely.”

The first guy sighed and said, “Damn, we're screwed.”

The second guy nodded, “Royally.”

************

Inside a nearby restaurant, The trio sit in a booth.

“That was close,” said Ayana with a sigh of relief.

The young woman replied, “Yes. Thank you for rescuing me. I don't know how I can repay your gracious kindness.”

Tyler gave her a serious look, “You can start by telling us what's going on between you and the Space Forces. Better yet, tell us why the second division is here.”

Ayana interjected, “Whoa, whoa, whoa! Wait a sec. I think asking her name would be more appropriate first. So, what IS your name?”

The girl replied, “My name is Yuri. Yuri Skyland. May I ask you your names?”

Ayana replied with a friendly smile, “I'm Ayana Blitz and this is Tyler Reid. He's an outlaw.”

Tyler exclaimed, “I am not!”

Ayana giggled and whispered to Yuri, “He's in denial.”

Tyler exclaimed again, “I. AM. NOT!”

Ayana smiled and snickered, “See what I mean?”

Tyler sighed and crossed his arms over his chest in irritation, “Whatever...”

Yuri looked at Tyler and says, “So this is what a real outlaw is like. Mr. Tyler, what exactly do you outlaws do?”

Tyler sighed and said, “First of all, I'm not an outlaw. Secondly, just call me Tyler. I ain’t old enough to be called ’mister’ yet.”

Yuri nodded and replied, “Understood.”

Tyler smiled a bits, “Good. So why were the Space Forces’ soldiers after you?”

Yuri looked down at the table, “I escaped from their lab. The were running all sorts of painful tests and experiments on me. The pain was unbearable. I had to escape. There were talking about making me a part of a new ship they were building. I didn't want to become a machine.”

Tyler leaned forward at the table looks Yuri straight in the eye, “Yuri. Try to remember. What was the name of the ship they were building?”

She thought for a few minutes and replied, “I think it was the X-10. I know it had and X and a 10 in it.”

Tyler's eyes went wide as he sat back in his chair and whispered to himself, “Fuck...not again. He couldn't possibly try it again.”

Ayana looked at Tyler with a strange, but concerned expression,“Are you ok?”

Tyler shook his head, returning from his trance,“Yeah, I'm fine. Yuri, was the name of it the XG-10?” Yuri thought for a few seconds,“Yes! Yes, that's it!”

Tyler sighed and muttered, “That bastard. That dirty son of a bitch....”

Yuri gasped as she heard Tyler's words, “Oh, my.”

Ayana looks at Tyler and says, “Ty, you sure you're okay?”

Flashback: 8 years ago

A younger version of the man in the dark sunglasses stood in front of a glass tank filled with water with a body floating vertically inside of it. The younger version of the man with the blue hair stepped up beside him, “Dr. Reid, are you ready to begin the first experiment?

Dr. Reid nodded, “Indeed, let us begin the primary tests.”

The body inside of the tank was a boy with a oxygen mask on and a pair of boxer shorts. The oxygen mask hid his face, otherwise his look of fear and terror would haven been noticed.

Dr. Reid looked to his partner, “Dr. Zanden, begin the shock wave test. He nodded and complied. The tank crackled with electricity and shocked the boy. His screams were silenced by the mask and his tears were hidden by the water.

Dr. Zanden turned the switch off, “Remember, if we're not careful, we could kill him.”

Dr. Reid replied, “I wouldn't kill my own son. But if he dies, it will be in the name of science. That is something to be proud of.”

Dr. Zanden nodded, “Yes. Science is one of man's greatest accomplishments. To die for it is an honor.”

Dr. Reid then said, “Throw the switch once more to confirm his electrical resistance.”

The doctor complied. The shock was much worse than the first. The boy inside felt death literally pulling him out of this life. His eyes closed and everything went black.

Later, he woke up in a metallic room. Even the bed was made of steel. It was cold and all he was given to wear was a hospital gown. The small window in the door opened up as he saw the face of than man who did this to him.

He then spoke, “Son. I'm proud of you. You are going to become a part of the most advanced spaceship in the entire galaxy. Isn't that splendid?”

The boy sighed and hung his head down, hiding his tearing eyes,“Father. Why? Why are you doing this to me?”

He replied, “Because I want you to be apart of this great accomplishment of mine.”

The boy sniffled and sobbed, “But I almost died...did that even matter to you?!”

Dr. Reid replied, “It does matter. Without you, this project would be hard to complete. However, dying in the name of science is a great honor. If the unfortunate happens, you should be proud to be apart of one of my experiments.”

The boy cried out, “I don't want to! I don't wanna do this anymore! I wanna go home!”

Dr. Reid coldly replied, “You have no say in the matter. You will remain here for as long as these experiments take. Death is another part of life. Therefore, fearing your own death is useless. Stupid boy, you should be thankful that I am giving you a chance to be of good use unlike your mother.”

That did it. The memories of his late mother played in his head along with the cruel words of his father.

The boy looked his father in the eyes with hatred, “I...hate you.”

Dr. Reid looked at his son and said with a slightly smug look, “You don't mean that. You'll thank me when it is all over.”

The boy shouted, “NO! I hate you! I HATE YOU!”

Dr. Reid closed the window of the metallic door, leaving him in the darkness once again.

End Flashback

Ayana waved her hand in Tyler's face,“Tyler? Are you sure you're okay? Hello? Earth to Tyler.”

Tyler looked up from the table, “Oh. Sorry, I was thinking about something.”

Ayana asked, “What exactly were you thinking about for that long?”

Tyler replied, “How we can get that spaceship.”

Ayana gave him a surprised look, “What?! Are you serious? What's the point of stealing it? Especially since the Space Forces are guarding it. That's suicide!”

Yuri looked at them both and said, “Actually, the Star Storm pirates are working with them, too.”

Ayana’s eyes popped open wide, “The Star Storm pirates?! Sheesh! If we even try to get in there, we're as good as dead! We'd be beyond screwed!”

Tyler smirked, “Not really. Come on, didn't you always tell me you wanted to travel through space? Here's your chance. We might even find out the real purpose of it being built.”

Yuri interjected again, “Well, I've been hearing them talk about finding something called the Galactic Leyline. It's supposed to have lots of mysteries there. Maybe even treasure.”

Ayana looked at Yuri with wong signs in her eyes, “Treasure?! Are you sure?! You mean dragonite treasure?! Worth millions and millions of wong?! I could buy a shopping mall full of clothes!!”

Yuri replied, “I guess. I've just been hearing lots of things like that during my captivity.”

Ayana muttered in a demented manner to herself about what clothes she would buy with the treasure. Yuri looked down sadly and remained silent for a while.

Tyler looked at her and asked, “Something wrong?”

Yuri replied sadly, “I miss my old life, even though I can't remember it. I don't remember my parents, but I miss them a lot. Does that sound strange to you?” Tears began to fall from her eyes.

Ayana replied, “I know how you feel, Yuri. I miss my mom and pop, too. But, there's no chance I can see ‘em again.”

Yuri looked at Tyler and asked, “Being an outlaw, you probably don't worry a lot about the past, do you?”

Tyler sighed, “I have concerns like everyone else does.”

Yuri smiled a little, “That's good to know. What about your parents? Don't you miss them?”

Tyler crossed his arms over his chest and turns away, “That's none of your business. Blitz, I'm gonna go check out a few things. I’ll be back home later.”

Ayana watched him get up and leave.

Yuri asked, “Did I offend him in some way?” Ayana smirked, “Don't worry about him. He'll get over it. He's probably going out to get loaded at a bar or something. So, tell me more about yourself.”

Yuri looked down at the table, “There's not much to tell. I can hardly remember most things about me except for my name, age, weight, height, and where I've been for the past few days.”

Ayana smiled, “Well, if we can get that spaceship they're building, there's a chance we'll find an answer out in space.”

Yuri’s eyes lit up with joy, “You...would do that....for me?”

Ayana smiled, “Sure, why not?”

Yuri looked up at Ayana with tears of joy streaming down her face, “Thank you.”

Ayana replied, “No problem. But the first step we have to take is getting you some clothes. That hospital gown is WAY too revealing from behind...”

Yuri nodded bashfully, "Yes...."

**********

Meanwhile, back at the lab complex, Dr. Reid stood before the Space Forces’ soldiers and says with a hint of menace, “I do not understand how such an elite force can lose such a harmless girl. Is this the best the second division of the Space Forces has to offer? Or is it that you are beginning to slack?”

One men began to speak, but Dr. Reid cut him off, “Ah, ah. Rhetorical question. Since you are the ones who let her escape, you will be responsible for retrieving her. Is that understood?”

Both men salute and shout, “Yes, sir!”

They turn around and exit quickly. Dr. Reid wasn't a fighter. It was just something about him that made people tremble in fear. But no matter how many people he intimidated, that something was always completely unknown.

He faced the completed ship with a menacing glint in his eye,“Soon, Yuri. I will find you and you shall be the key to my dream coming true. Very soon.”

**********

Tyler sits at a bar and looks around at the different types of people there. Some he could tell if they were pirates, self proclaimed outlaws or true outlaws. And quite frankly, true outlaws were really rare at this day and age. Not like years ago. Change was everywhere and it was hard to deal with it at times. But, he would never be the one to admit hardship, no matter how rough it got for him.

He was so deep in though he almost ignored the bartender,“Hey, buddy. What can I do for you?”

Tyler shook away his thoughts and said, “Oh. I’ll have some ginger ale.” He thought to himself, “Better not chug down any hard stuff. Breaking in that lab’ll be hard enough without a hangover.”

Tyler heard scattered laughter from around the bar at the mention of ginger ale.

“Look at that, the little boy wants his ginger ale!”

Tyler ignored it and continued to mind his own business. The bartender looked at Tyler and then at the guys starting the trouble. He was an older man with some gray hairs. A real peaceful person.

The last thing he wanted was to see a young guy like Tyler get hurt, “Um, sir? I think it would be best if you left. Those guys are pirates and they love to start trouble.”

Tyler sipped his drink and replied with a smirk, “If you're worried about the bar, I can only promise to try not to mess it up too bad if a fight breaks out.”

The bartender looked at Tyler in surprise, “I'm sure you're a great fighter, but you don't have to risk your life to prove it.”

Tyler looked at the bartender and saw the sincere look on his face, “All right. I understand.”

Tyler thought to himself, “Shit! How am I gonna pay for this drink?!”

The bartender saw that the pirates were looking at Tyler like a group of bullies targeting the neighborhood nerd, “Don't worry about the drink, it's on the house.”

Tyler nodded and headed towards the door. Right before he could exit, tall, muscular guy with an eye patch, black leather pants and a black leather vest stood in his way, “Going so soon? Ain’t cha gonna finish yer ginger ale?”

Tyler narrowed his eyes and snapped back with menace in his voice, “Get the hell outta my way.”

The guy sneered and pulled out a dagger which shimmered with reflecting light at the tip of the blade.“You better watch yer mouth, little man. Unless you don't wanna keep yer tongue.”

Another person stood behind him and said, “Looks like yer gonna have ta learn tha hard way, kid.”

Soon, he was surrounded by four men, all twice his size, “All four of you against me? Sounds about even.”

He got into a battle stance and sneered.

Suddenly, a female voice shouted, “That's enough! You can let him go.”

The four guys backed away from Tyler on command. In a dark corner of the bar, there stood a woman wearing  black pants with a brown cloak, hiding her upper body and a hood hiding her hair. She slowly walked toward Tyler.

Tyler thought in his mind as his sneer faded, “What now?”

She looked at Tyler directly into his eyes.

She smirked and said, “At ease, boys. This one is mine.”

Tyler cocked an eyebrow and thought, “I wonder what she means by that?”

She pulled out a huge dagger that could almost pass for a sword, “I challenge you to a duel outside in five minutes.”

Suddenly, everyone in the bar turned around, gasping in horror, all in unison.  She then walked out of the bar. Everyone began to murmur amongst themselves, mostly about how much of a shame it is for a boy to die so young.

Tyler sighed and shook his head ,“Next time, I'm ordering a beer...”
