Halfway through the 1990's the N64 was all over the video game headlines.
Two Arcade games were produced to set apart the facts from the rumours.
These machines were made to demonstrate just what the N64 was capable of
and me a money making stop gap experiment. These two games were two that
were scheduled to be released on the n64 (At that stage it was named the
Ultra 64 (Hence the Ultra combos in KI)) These two games were Killer Instinct
and Cruise n' USA. KI was an instant success, borrowing the best bits from
lots of beat-em-ups and adding it's own special ingredients. Embarrassingly
enough Cruisn' was a flop on the 64 and KI was reproduced nearly arcade
perfectly on the little old Snes. Although somewhat embarrassing it was
still great news for Nintendo since Snes KI sold by the bucket load and
probably sold many a Snes along with another game made by Rare DK giving
the Snes an extended life span and letting it stand up to the new PSuX.
Killer Instinct had killer (had to use it somewhere) graphics that had
to easily be among the best on it, good animation, awesome sound and most
importantly ultra (another one I had to use) Gameplay - of course (hey
its made by Rare). Composed of 10 characters each with combos, finishing
moves, counter moves, combo breakers, air juggles and more! More!!
MORE!!!
Each Character has a truckload of moves including Counters, Projectiles,
Counter Projectiles, Teleports, Uppercuts, Openers, Finishers and more.
My favoroute characyer would have to be Fulgore a vulgur robot with immense
destructive power. Fulgore specialises in Eye lazers, Teleports, Energy
streams, Quick and Powerful kicks and awesome Uppercuts. Watching a Fulore
vs Fulgore match is indeed a treat with some spectacular range of moves
and counters. My favourite technique would have to be teleporting right
behind your opponant and emerging in a powerful uppercut, sending them
flying through the air. Another great looking move that just had to be
mentioned belongs to an icy alien, who can liquidise and emerge from liquidising
in a spectacular uppercut, he can also form his arms into daggers or the
great anti-air spike uppercut doohicky.
The Enemy AI is another great strong point in the game. This is either
the first or one of the first fighters, where enemys learn your moves and
how to counter them. What this means is that you are forced to try lotsa
differant techniques and can't just win a round by repeating the same move
over and over.
All of this is presented very well and the fighting areana's are good!
