1080 Review
1080 (Pronounced Ten Eighty) is a brilliant snowboarding
game brought to you by the makers of Wave Race! Wave Race is the definitive
water sports game and probably will be until Wave Race on the Gcube. So
can the makers of Wave Race make a game that is as good on snow as Wave
Race was on water? You betcha! 1080 has a lot of similarities to Wave Race,
such as the racin/stunts approach, but with more enthasis on each.
Racing
The racing is absolutely top notch and is extremely
convincing, being one of those games that nearly immediately "Zones" you.
Although the computer players are very annoying and seem to cheat (not
as much as in Mario Kart though) and also have an annoying habit of wiping
both of you out. This becomes more of a problem the harder the game gets
and it is vital to beat them to open up tracks. Once you have the tracks
opened up though, you are in for a treat because the "time attack" mode
is bliss! You will become obsessed with all of the factors in the game
that are at all related to your performance (everything), you will be searching
for the best lines, the best snow, the perfect landing, the perfect corner
etc etc etc for ages to come!
The courses themselves are very well designed
and provide a very interesting race, with many paths and obstacles to spice
things up! There are around nine courses in all (including the half pipe
and ramp "course"), each one has it's own personality and style. In the
courses you will encounter such things as houses, cars, bridges, jumps,
logs, caves and my favourite, frozen roads and rivers. Each different surface/obstical
will drastically change your performance, requiring a lot of split-second
choices.
Stunts
Of course each track can be raced in the stunt
mode, which is a real blast and is played quite differently from the racing,
whilst you have to make checkpoints you will be trying to cram as much
air between each as you can without taking up too much time. Mastering
of the stunts will take ages, whilst some stunts are quite basic there
are some real nasty button combinations for the trickiest of tricks and
you will also get more points for combo's. Being used to playing Tony Hawk
on my PC and stacking tricks, getting the tricks done when and how I wanted
was extremely hard and the controls for stunts did seem a little clumsy
for a while. Doing the stunts though is only half of it! You still have
to land and if you lose your balance or alternatively land on your head,
you will lose all the points your stunt racked up, a lot like Tony hawk
but landing requires even more skill! This game is how I like em - Plenty
of room for self improvement and true mastery!
Sound
The sound effects in this game are all of top
quality and are very convincing apart from the non convincing but apparently
sterio-typical voices (The english guy sounds more american). Oh and the
music, whilst normally niether good or bad gets marked down because of
one very annoying trac that sounds a little like this - I like that, I
like that. Ride me baby. There goes the phone", repeated until you finish
the track! Really this track is so mindless and repedative it could be
mistaken as a Vengaboys record! Nooooooooooooooooo! Overall the sound is
pretty decant though!
Conclusion
Packed with all I have mentioned and a few additional
game modes and things, this game really should be considered for your collection
- especially now it is often found at discount prices! Considered by most
as the best snowboarding game yet! ( I am typing this at the end of the
year 2000), Nintendo does it again.
