Mario Kart Review

Yet another reason why four controller ports is such a good idea (take note psx2), Mario Kart is still one of the top N64 party games! Strap yourselves in and prepare for a turbulant ride through Marioville.

Mario Kart is an awesome multi-player blast that is fun in so many ways, it has heaps of well designed tracks each with some special tricks up it's sleeve to keep the action interesting, as well as some interesting power up's to blast your friends of the track with, including the awesome leader-seeker that will follow the track until it catches up with the leader, you also do not want to be between the person that launches it or the leader. The power-up's are "balanced" so the further you are behind, the more likely you will be to get a more useful item, also the karts are handicapped so the further you are behind the faster you go, this makes the game more even and keeps the action close and even a newbie may be able to keep up. Unfortunatly the flipside to this is that all the skill (apart from powerslides) is sucked out of the game and the reults are pretty random, whilst this is good in some ways, it would be nice if there was an option to turn it off!

The single player game, unfortunatly is a major let down and will not hold you for long. Apart from the Time attack mode that is quite good, the single player is extreamly shallow and repedative. To make this worse the computer players are the biggest cheats on the planet! You can be half a lap ahead for the whole race until the last stretch, where magically a computer player whizzes up behind you and tries to overtake. Also if you are slow some computer players will tag behind to keep you company - how thoughtful. Whilst this is obviously an attemp to keep the action upclose, it just makes the game pointless! Why bother racing well if in the end it dosn't really matter?

Graphics in this game are very siple and are intended to be so to convey that "cartoony/cute" feel to it and is quite easy to look at and does manage to convey some atmosphere and get the job done at a fast speed.

Conclusion
If you are looking for a single player game, keep well clear! If you are like me, you will just stick to renting this game when you have some chums (now there is a word I havn't used before) over and have a blast whilst you are at it!
