Smash Bros Review

Yet another awesome party game by Nintendo! This one should end many a debate upon what Nintendo character could beat up who. Yes, that's right a fighting game with the most famous Nintendo characters and it's 4 player!

This game absolutely ROCKS in multiplayer, as well as the sheer comedy value in Mario beating up Pikachu in Hyrule Castle, the moves and power-up's add a huge amount of hilarity into the game. When I was playing this against some friends, we were in fits of laughter, even if you are losing all the time this game is still great fun! It is full of fast action and huge power-up's. All of the characters are really well balanced, each having their fair share of moves and each having reasons to be used. My favourite character has to be Mario because of his AWESOME uppercuts and mid air moves, we once had a game where all four players were Mario and to put it simply, the characters were in the air 97.5% of the time! Mario has awesome juggling capabilities and you can have some great fun punching other characters further and further off the screen.

Smash bros plays differently than an average fighting game (It's Nintendo remember). Instead of having health bars and being knocked out when they run out, you have a percentage score, the higher you percentage, the further you fly when you get hit and the more likely you are to be punched clean off the map! This leads to some absolutely hectic mid-air action of trying to land back on the level. Another stroke of genius on Nintendo's behalf is that the matches (by default) are timed and you respawn after being knocked off the map, so the action never slows down for anyone. Of course because of these features, the levels are different to the normal bog standard flat level with a bit map as a background, the levels are still 2d, but they are full of pitfalls and perils and play upwards as much as sideways sometimes! Also worthy of note is how each level plays differently, the best example being Fox McClouds (Lylat Wars/Starfox), where you are fighting in space upon the "great fox" and every now and again Arwings fly past and do barrel rolls and even sometimes fly past shooting, causing for even more hectic action - Brilliant!

Other moves worthy of mention
-Yoshi eating enemies and then farting them off the edge
-Kirby being able to suck in enemies and take their moves, or just fire them at people
-Links Hook shot

Unfortunately there is a flip side to this goodness! Whilst the multi-player is absolutely flawless, the single player is extremely shallow (Like Mario Kart) and will not have you interested for more than the first few minutes, fortunately though you can instead goto the multiplayer mode and fight 3-bots instead, which whilst nowhere near as good as playing against friends, is actually quite fun! Basically this game is a MUST if you play against friends often.

Also I have to mention that in multiplayer sometimes it can be hard to keep track of your player, but we found that this just added to the action and how funny the game is to play!
