Hey, kids! It's time to learn about the differences between the Amazon Trio in the manga and the Amazon Trio in the anime! Boy oh boy! Of course, that is the easier comparison...seeing as the manga Trio lasts a piddly 4 acts before being horribly mauled while the anime Trio lasts for half a season before one of them is horribly mauled, then they die and go to Elysion as feeble spirits or are revived by Pegasus and then sent to live in Elysion(they could have been a bit clearer for those of us who were bitter and disillusioned, dammit!) Still, I think there's plenty to explore! #1. In the manga, the Trio have little...if any personality. This is probably the most important aspect. Sure, Fish babbles like a valley girl(well, in English, anyway...)and they make various announcements...
Yeah, but do we ever see Tiger-Eye become an...artist? Please tell me that's just a bad translation...or Hawk-Eye show any of that wisdom? Does Fish-Eye...totally fight hard?(yes, but not totally hard enough...) Well...no. #2. In the manga, the majority of Tokyo is not ravished. In fact, only the Sailor Scouts are molested, and only 3 out of 6(well, the six who are around during the Trio's lifespan). This could very easily have something to do with #1. #3. In the manga, there's no bar. There's no massage parlor either, but more importantly, the Amazon Trio never once convenes to drink and leer(they're too busy being picked off one by one like the monsters of the day they are). Hell, the Trio convenes...once. When PallaPalla makes them human. Although I think it's safe to assume that some more convening went on that wasn't developed enough...(see #5) So there's no drinking, another difference related to difference #1. #4. In the manga, none of them wear gloves. Yes, they still look hideous--and Tiger-Eye never takes that damn headband off--but Tiger-Eye's bizarre sleeves are gone as are Hawk-Eye's gloves, leaving another frightening tank top, skank bracelets, and press-on nails everywhere. See the above picture where the manga Trio shares their ambitions, education level, and fighting skills. Lee Press-On Nails for all! #5. One of these things is not like the other...but in the manga, it's a different one. When Fish-Eye goes after Mercury, he appears with her reflection in a mirror, about to kiss her. When Tiger-Eye goes after Mars, he uses the same tactic as Fish-Eye, then also appears holding a wedding gown clad Mars in the mirror. When Hawk-Eye goes after Jupiter, he wears a dress-complete with boobs--and is a simple shop-keeper who befriends her. As for exhibit B, there's Hawk-Eye's reaction to Tiger-Eye's death. Yeah, I so found homo-erotic implications in Beckett's Waiting for Godot and Endgame, and PBS' Sesame Street. But did anyone give a damn when Fish-Eye died? #6. No dream mirrors. And no dream mirrors means no "1, 2, 3." Of course, who needs to develop a 1, 2, 3 tactic when you can just have mirror sex with someone's reflection?(mirror sex...that's something they should've put in the anime!) #7. In the manga, the Trio knows damn well what they really are. Hell, Hawk and Tiger are in animal form when they're killed and Fish-Eye disguises himself as a fish to as a way to get Amy. And while glad to be human, they seem moderately okay with it.(but who knows? After all, see #1) #8. The manga Trio doesn't turn good. Yeah, well, in the anime I got the impression that Tiger-Eye and Fish-Eye helping Sailor Moon had little to do with being semi-decent creatures and more to do with needing someone to avenge Hawk-Eye(someone who could actually hit the broad side of the barn...) and because, even with the golden crystal with which to activate that spell, if they didn't save Sailor Moon, they would have ended up human and dead. For whatever the reason, 2/3rds of the Trio saves Sailor Moon's butt. In the manga, they're individually torn apart by assorted sailor scouts with no great thoughts on life, the universe, or everything. This probably relates to #1. #8. In the manga, the Trio stays dead. No anime-style attempt at redemption(or vengeance. Whatever) so, naturally Pegasus doesn't see the point of reviving their evil animal butts. |
