Chiko is a little girl who is as sweet, innocent and caring as Unico. She has brown hair pulled back on one side by a yellow hair clip, and cute black eyes and she is always seen in her green dress pajamas because she is constantly in bed.
In the pilot film, Chiko is a sickly girl for unknown reasons, but the most obvious explaination is the pollution that constantly pours out of the stacks of a nearby factory/plant. In any case, the pollution isn't helping her recover from her illness. She seems to be a very intelligent girl, figuring out what kind of animal Unico is immediately, because she remembers seeing a animal like him in one of her books. She seems to be well read, obviously because with being restricted to her bed and her room, one of the few things she can do besides sleep, is read.
All Chiko seems to want is the freedom to be a healthy child who can roam outside, but most of all, all she seems to really want is a friend. Unico becomes her friend/pet for a short time. In the end, Unico cures Chiko of whatever is ailing her with flowers West Wind gives him. Chiko who can now run around like any other healthy kid, then runs out searching for Unico to try to tell her friend the good news of recovery or/and thank him. Of course, Unico has already left with West Wind, and Chiko doesn't see him leave.
