Melvin is a golden tomcat with brown strips and he wears a wooden music headset that provides music by way of a frog and bird inside it. After becoming Toby's servant, he wears a short red cape.
When Unico is left in a forest by the West Wind, the first person he meets is Melvin, asleep on a tree branch. Melvin is a grumpy bully, a real coward at heart who has declared the whole forest as his own. At first he's terrified of Unico even though he's smaller than him, since he doesn't know what he is, and also because he has a horn. Only when Melvin's goons come along does Melvin realize he's bigger than Unico and that Unico is probably a pushover. Melvin and his goons then smack Unico around and chase him through the forest until Unico falls in a nearby shallow.
When Melvin sees Toby on a tree playing his flute, he sees Toby as a threat to his territory, and feeling pretty good about himself because of his earlier bullying of Unico, him and his friends yell at Toby to get lost. Toby then changes Melvin's friends into puppets and chases Melvin through the forest. Melvin then begs to be spared from being turned into a puppet and offers his headset to Toby in exchange for his life. However, Toby doesn't want it (and it seems Toby was enjoying chasing him; hee hee, Toby has a bit of a cruel side), so Melvin then yells that he will become Toby's servant, his slave, and will do anything to save himself. Toby then decides to make Melvin his servant and gives him the job of spotting forest animals to change into puppets as well as being a look out for Kuruku and covering for Toby when he sneaks off of Nightmare Island.
