Silver Cross___By Inaho (aka Sailor Deimos)

Finally got my first Treize and Lady Une story finished! ::dances:: This story takes place between the time when Lady Une saves Treize in Wing (my favorite scene!) and the beginning to the final battle with White Fang. I tad AU, since it takes place on Earth and not in space. “Micheals” is the name I gave to the cute soldier that Lady Une stops when Sally Po and Relena meet up with OZ (episode after Treize dies when Une asks Relena to shoot her)…you know, looks about eighteen, wavy brown hair, very kawaii….no? GAH! Watch that episode! You should know your kawaii Ozzie soldiers, minna! >.<

I don’t own Treize, Lady Une, Gundam Wing, Tiffany’s, Sri Lanka or any military outposts on Sri Lanka. Nor do I own the English language, alphabet or any of the punctuation used in this story.

“Lady, may I have a moment of your time?” He said. She stood up from her seat and saluted. Next to her, Lt. Micheals paused from his data processing to ease-drop into their conversation. A few other soldiers stopped what they were working on for a few seconds as well and listened with a cat’s curiosity the intercourse between their general and his best colonel.

“Of course, Your Excellency,” She said and felt the sudden rush of warmth in her chest that she always felt when in his presence. With it came a sense of completion and wholeness that she knew to be love, but also the feeling of longing for something she could never truly have. Just because she loved him did not mean that he loved her in return. Nevertheless, she would continue to cherish what time they spent together.

He offered her his arm. The soldiers, apparently having had their curiosity fulfilled, went back to their previous tasks, whispering in low voices amongst themselves. She ignored them and took his arm, and together they walked out of the main building of the base and into the fresh air. As the sun began to set over the horizon the dim lights of the base began to glow brighter.

They walked together for a while, chatting about nothing and everything, pretending that the upcoming battle would never happen. It was the times like these, when they didn’t have to talk about war or death and simply get to spend time together, that she enjoyed the most.

Their walk took them outskirts of the base where they stopped for a rest. The sun has just finished sinking into the thin black line of the ocean’s edge, casting one last brilliant ray of light before disappearing below.

He turned to her and took her hands in his, catching her completely off guard. She felt nervous; he never touched her in such a manner unless she did something wrong. Repetition of past mistakes had taught her that. Just as she began to feel the joy of the time they had just shared together sink like the sun, he brushed a strand of brown hair from her face and said quietly,

“I have something for you.”

He let go of her hands and reached into one of the pockets of his uniform and from it produced a small black box. She looked at it curiously. What could it be? She didn’t deserve anything from him…

“I want you to have this,” He said and handed her the box. She took the box from him and slowly opened the lid.

It was a small cross on a chain crafted from the finest silver. At the center of the cross was an unfolding rose. Gasping, she lifted it gently from the box and held it up to the moonlight.

“I-It’s beautiful…” She faltered, searching for the right words. She was to shocked by the generosity of his gift to manage anything more then, “You really shouldn’t have…I mean, I don’t want to sound ungrateful because I really, truly am grateful but…why?”

“Because you deserve it,” He said simply. “I saw it in a jewelry store in Berlin and you immediately came to mind. Here, let us see how it looks on you.”

He carefully took the cross from her hands. As he did so their fingertips touched each other lightly. He smiled as she bit her lip and tried not to blush. She held her hair back to keep it out of his way as he linked the small chain in the back together. It felt light around her neck; she reached up and touched it with her hand, then turned to face him. He smiled with satisfaction.

“I think your uniform clashes with it. I might be forced to change the colors on these dreadful things so that it matches,” He said jokingly. “I bought it for you awhile back, when you went into space. I had meant to send it you, but I never got the chance.”

She said, “Thank you, Your Excellency. I’m grateful that you were thinking about me…”

The amusement in his eyes caused her to turn red and look away. “I can’t imagine how much it must have cost you,” She finished lamely in a lost effort to regain some of her composure.

“Cost doesn’t matter, though I will say it is handcrafted Tiffany.”

“Commander Treize! That’s not fair! Now I am going to have to find you something special for Christmas as well, and I don’t even know where to begin.”

For a brief second the urge to tell her what he had planned for his fate in the battle to come overtook him. But he held it at bay; it would hurt her too much, and he couldn’t bare the thought of her being hurt again.

Instead he laughed and put a protecting and comforting arm around her shoulder. “Lady,” He said, “Your presence and good company is enough for me.”

She leaned into him a little then, and he squeezed her shoulder. Together they walked back into the base, feeling closer now then they ever had before. This brief time together, on the outskirts of the Sri Lanka Military Base, was more then precious to the both of them and they knew it. The future seemed to distant and far away to even be considered and the past was long left behind. It was time spent that neither of them would forget for the rest of their days.
