Kodomo no Omocha is a very fast-paced anime. What with Sana's hyperactive hyjinks, Rei-kun's obsession with being the best manager on Earth, Mama driving around doing Kami-knows-what, Zenjiro-san's loopyness, Tsuyoshi-kun's little rages, and Hayama's...Hayama-ness, the viewer is bound to get lost without an adequate aid. That aid comes in the form of a strange little half bat/half rabbit by the name of BABBIT!
Babbit serves as both a narrator and an "on again, off again" character for the viewers of Kodocha. To keep those who are watching this madhouse of a TV show from getting lost, Babbit-san pops in every once in a whileto give people the gist of the situation. He also tries his best to be an actual part of the show. He is often seen trying to cheer up the depressed members of the cast, correcting Sana's failed word puns, or even offering friendly household advice ("Wash your hands!"). He even tries to put his photo in each episode's intro. (Sana's comebacks are priceless). However, most of the time Kodocha's regular cast is more annoyed than thrilled by Babbit's prescence and the poor creature often finds itself on the wrong end of a tongue lashing and even (though usually unintentional) physical violence.
As you can see, Babbit is a cross between a bat & a rabbit (hence his name). He's white with tiny blue wings and a little pink heart on his chest. Unless he's really, REALLY shocked about something, he usually keeps his eyes closed...kinda reminds ya a bit of Chichiri, ne?
The interesting thing about Babbit is that there's a seemingly never-ending supply of Babbits from all around the world. In one particularly humorous example in episode 18, our regular Babbit falls asleep, so his apparently Australian relative takes over narrating for most of the episode! Also, like Trigun's Kuroneko-Sama, Babbit's face graces many consumer products and logos in Kodocha, even appearing in Sana's own signature!
Babbit is simply all-around kawaii. From his cute & simplistic looks to his sometimes-smartass personality to his apparent stroke of ill luck getting along with the cast of Kodocha, there's always something in Babbit that just screams "KAWAII!!!" Therefore, we'd like to name Babbit the Gratuitous Kawaii Creature of the Month for July of 2001.
