How modern Sailormoon began...

Usagi, who is late as usual this morning is in quite a rush to get to school on time. After running about the house she is quickly gone and runs down the street. According to the manga, Usagi is distracted by her plight, and steps on a black cat! Distraught, she picks it up and tries to revive it. The black cat starts to swat and scratch at her but seems a bit troubled at the band-aid on its forehead and jumps out of Usagi's arms as she removes it. This reveals a shiny crescent moon on the cat's head which was probably thought to be a scar by whoever put the band-aid there. Usagi is somewhat in awe at such a strange marking but quickly remembers... she is still late for school. She bounds off, leaving the cat staring after her.

Usagi arrives late and is sent out into the hallway. Even though she was reprimanded she takes out her lunch and begins to eat it in the hall. As she begins to eat the teacher scolds her for doing so and brings up her latest flunking grade. Usagi's test grade was a 30%! Her day suddenly took a turn for the worst, for at the end of it, she would have to face her parents.

However, despite her bad mood, she foolishly decides to go out with her friends after school to waste time and relax when she could be studying. She came to see Naru's (her best friend) mother's jewelry shop where there was a huge sale going on, every girl was buying something except for Usagi (since she already spent her saved money). On her way to the Crown Arcade from the jewelry store she ran into a gentleman by the name of Chiba Mamoru. How they met was quite odd: Usagi had crumpled up her failed test and flicked it behind her shoulder... unfortunately right into Mamoru's face. The dashing young man read the test score and told her what a bad score it was and teased her. Usagi grabbed the paper out of his hand in embarrassment and stormed off to the arcade on her way home.

There at the arcade Usagi was consorting with Motoki, one of her friends who worked there. Again, the strange black cat appeared out of no where. Usagi's friend tells her how the cat had been hanging around there for a few days. Usagi soon decides to go home, feeling a bit uneasy around the animal.

Finally making it to her house in the evening, Usagi comes to face her mother. Despite Usagi's plan not to bring up the subject of the wretched test score, her mother happily does (mentioning Umino, one of Usagi's very intelligent classmates, earned a 95%). Usagi then, after being questioned on how she performed on the exam, presented her the results. Her mother flipped, of course, and her brother found a new reason to make fun of her. Usagi was forced to leave the house. She bawled and begged to be let in and her aggitated mom allowed her entrance.

Once in her room, Usagi fell back into her bad habits and slept instead of doing her math homework. Waltzing in through the open window came the odd black cat. It woke Usagi up and began to speak to her, its name was Luna. Our groggy Usagi decided she was still dreaming and so rolled over. Luna persuaded her to listen by throwing to her a lovely brooch. Luna explained that her skills to talk and comrehend had been hindered by the bandage; she told her how she knew Usagi was the one of the warriors she was looking for to save the planet. Unfortunately our new super heroine was not listening, who admired the beautiful magical brooch in the mirror. Luna told her the special words to activate the transformation sequence and after Usagi repeated them, Sailormoon appeared! Usagi-turned-Sailormoon was confused but Luna had caught her right in time: evil forces were set into motion; Naru was in danger.

Evil forces had been plotting to take over earth, but they first needed an energy source. The newest host for their dark powers was the jewelry sold in the store Usagi had visited earlier that day. Those who bought and wore the evil jewelry had their energy drained from them, which was transferred to make the dark side stronger. It was Naru's scream that alerted Sailormoon's super-hearing and it was her mask that sent her images of the dilemma that announced trouble was afoot. Sailormoon left to rescue her friend, even though she still had not a clue what was going on.

Sailormoon soon arrived and announced she would punish the monster. The youma, who was attacking Naru, let her alone. It then summoned the dark power of the jewelry to gain control over the women. It used them as warriors against Sailormoon. She was quite frightened to say the least, Luna even had to encourage her to stay and fight.

When Sailormoon was almost in their grasp she screamed. It would be the obvious thing to do, but in this case it was a great thing: her super powers amplified her voice to an atrocious frequency which knocked down all of the dark minions. Luna then quickly informed Usagi that she had another power: Sailormoon could take off her tiara and throw it. Sailormoon did so, and this resulted in cleanly decapitating the monster with her carefully aimed frisby throw.

After her victory, Sailormoon realized a man had been hiding in the shadows: his name was Tuxedo Kamen. He said only a few words (I will add what he said later) and then disappeared out of sight. Sailormoon was lovestruck and stared after him. Although this battle did not end the plots of the Dark Kingdom, earth now had a defense against the unleashing of a powerful evil which would have destroyed the world.
