Neon Genesis Evangelion is, without a doubt, one of the greatest anime of all time. With its perfect blend of soul-wrenching drama, fast-paced (and sometimes disturbing) action, and all of the elements of a great tragedy story, it surely is hard to top. However, a vast majority of Evangelion's fans only see this side of the series. They fail to see the darker, more exostential side. Hideaki Anno's masterpiece Evangelion is much more than EVAs fighting Angels and angst-ridden characters; it is a philosophical journey that challenges religious beliefs and sets the viewer's mind into a state of emotional and mental unrest. From the Third Impact to what Shinji was thinking in episode 2, the deep philosophies of Evangelion are constantly at work in every minute detail of this anime masterpiece.
The philosophies of Evangelion are open to any interpretation one can devise. On these pages, you will find my own interpretation, drawn from my limited knowledge of religious scripture, multiple viewings of Evangelion, and even archived interviews with the series' creator, Hideaki Anno. This is Neon Genesis Evangelion as it appears to me. This is my cruel angel's thesis.
