Dragonball was the first in the series, obviously. It focused around the story of young Goku, who tried to gather all the dragonballs for a reason I can't remember.
Piccolo, father of Piccolo, was Goku's enemy throughout the series. He was eventually killed by Goku, but we decided to bring him back to life with the dragonballs to wreak havoc once again!
