Tenjou Utena is the girl who wants to be a prince. She came to Ohtori Academy in search of the prince that comforted her when she was a little girl after her parents had died. She got tangled in the duels of the Student Council when she challenged Saionji Kyouichi, the kendo team captain, to a duel after he posted a love letter that her friend had written him. Mistaking her for a real duelist, Saionji accepted Utena's challenge, but when they dueled, he was not prepared for the display of power that Utena gave him. Utena herself was not prepared for the spoils of her victory, namely, Himemiya Anthy. Not only was Utena totally confused by the whole dueling arena with it's architecturally impossible stairs and upside-down, floating, spinning castle, but now she was engaged to a girl she had never met before, a girl who didn't seem to think this was strange at all. Utena promised not to duel again, but when Saionji challanged her a second time, she found that she could not lose and let Anthy go back to her former fiancé, who had treated her rather badly. And so, Utena was totally caught in the web of dueling that made up the lives of the Student Council. She never understood why they constantly competed for Anthy, even though it was explained to her that with the Rose Bride came a great power that would grant the champion the ability to "revolutionize the world." Duel after duel came and went, and Utena defeated duelist after duelist. She did not want the power to revolutionize the world. All Utena wanted was to find her prince, and maybe pass finals. She also grew very attached to Anthy, and wanted to help Anthy become independent and break out of the cage that was her duties as the Rose Bride.

Utena is a very strong person. She doesn't let anyone shove her around and she always seems to fight for the good fortune of others. She doesn't really understand the duels, yet she keeps fighting because she doesn't want to lose Anthy. Utena's relationship with the other duelists vary. She is pretty good friends with Miki and he helps her with her schoolwork and stuff (because he's a little genius... doesn't that sound like a blue haired character from another anime?). She and Saionji seem to have a mutual-hate relationship but they act civil towards each other when the situation calls for it. There's never any love lost between them. Utena respected Juri for a while because she had a reputation of being influential and powerful, but after Juri tried to get Utena to throw her rose signet away, they sort of fell out. Nanami constantly tries to do Utena bodily harm for "stealing" her big brother away from her, but Utena mostly ignores her unless it's unavoidable. Touga, on the other hand, has a more complex relationship with our heroine. He is obviously very attracted to her, and he actually got her to think that he was her prince. This shook Utena's confidence so much that Touga defeated her in a duel. This incident took Utena's confidence totally away. She started to wonder if a girl can actually be a prince, and she began to wear a normal uniform, and began to act like a "normal" girl until Wakaba talked some sense into her. Wakaba told her that "Everyone else's normal isn't normal for you." Utena challanged Touga and won Anthy (and her confidence) back. This is where the Student Council Saga ends. In the next saga, Utena starts having to fight all sorts of people who aren't duelists, which really confuses her. She also becomes friends with Anthy's brother Akio, who is the deputy trustee chairman of Ohtori Academy (his fiancée's father is the chairman). And time goes on, as Utena keeps dueling student after student. In the third saga, she and Anthy move to Akio's tower because he wants to be closer to his sister, and he didn't want to separate her from her only friend. The rest will have to be a secret or else the ending will be given away!

Your name of Utena creates a very sensitive, inspirational, and idealistic nature. You have an appreciation for all the fine and beautiful things in life, and could excel in music, art, drama, or literary undertakings, where you could find an expression for your deeper feelings that you would not find otherwise. As a result of your love of the out-of-doors, you would experience the most peace and harmony out in the quiet of nature. Your sensitive nature causes you to lack self-confidence, and to withdraw from arguments or turmoil, as any discord reflects quickly through your nervous system. You cannot stand pressure and desire to work where there is no confusion. This name restricts proper verbal expression; as a result, you are often lonely, craving understanding of others. Yours is a very deep, reflective nature, but others would never know it as you keep your deeper feelings within. Tension resulting from the use of this name would affect the heart, lungs, and respiratory organs, or the nervous system.

-Miki: I really don't know what to say about Utena. She isn't one of my favorite characters. I don't know why, but she doesn't appeal to me in any way. It may be because I have a thing for not really liking main characters. In Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon, Sailormoon is probably one of my least favorite character(aside from Sailorstarmaker). The typical hero types don't amaze me in any way. Oh well, maybe I'll have a change of heart for her someday...
Well, I've had that change of heart! The movie has made me change how I feel about Utena and Anthy. I like them now. Plus Utena's wavy hairstyle in the movie is kewl too. And everyone seems to just love Utena and Anthy as a couple, so I guess I should be feeling the same way.

-Nanami: Unlike Miki-kun, I favor Utena. She is a very noble and free-spirited young girl. Her whole determination and will to fight is really cool to me. I like it when she kicks Saionji's butt because I really dislike him. I also love her hair and outfit! Also her English VA is the same as many other popular anime characters that I like (such as Jigglypuff and Misty from Pokemon). Can't you tell that I'm a dubbie? Isn't that pathetic?

-Usagi-chan: I too totally disagree with Miki-kun. I usally like the main characters the most, like Sailormoon. To me Sailormoon is not like the typical main character. From what I have seen and read Utena seems to be a very interesting and unselfish person. She is the one who stands up for Anthy.
