"Gravity cannot be held responsible for people falling in love." -Anonymous ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* A man with silky black hair, midnight blue eyes, and a height of 6"2, was sitting at his desk in his New York office going over some paper work at Garrison Computers. His tie was undone and was now hanging from the collar of his midnight blue shirt, which match his eyes, his suit jacket was hanging from the back of his chair, and the top button of his shirt was open. He tried reading some of the paper work on a new project for the company when the phone rang. "Darien Garrison," he said in a business-like voice when he answered the phone. "Hey Dare! It's me, Andrew!" "Hey Andrew! I haven't heard from you in a while. So what's up?" "I've got big news!" "My cousin has big news? This must be good," said Darien, very interested as he sat up on his chair eagerly awaiting for Andrew to continue. "Oh, it is Darien! It is!" "Well, what is it?" asked Darien a little impatiently. "Rita and I are engaged!" "Congratulations Andy! I can't believe you're ready to settle down, and at our age, too." "What do you mean?" "I mean, we're still young and you want to settle down that fast?" asked Darien skeptically. "Darien, I've always wanted to settle down as soon as I've found the right woman, and Rita is the one." " I just don't see what's the point of getting married. Most people I know that got married are either unhappy or divorced. And most of them got married at about our age, too. It's better to be single. At least you can date any woman you want without ever worrying about settling down, or having a marriage that never worked out to begin with." "What are you saying? Are you saying you're NEVER going to get married? EVER?!" "Yes. Marriage is just not for me. Neither is commitment." "Why not?" "For starters, I wouldn't have any time to spend with any woman, I always work late, all women are the same, and no woman has kept me interested long enough to make me want to be with her." "You know, Darien, one of these days you'll meet a girl who'll capture your heart without her even knowing she did. You might even fall hard for this girl for the first time in your life, then you'll eat your words." "Yeah, when hell freezes over! That'll never happen. I won't find a girl who will make me feel that way about her. I'm just not interested." "Darien, you don't even give any of these girls a chance. You use these women only when you have a special event to attend and need a date to escort you. You think that's all they're useful for. When you do date them, you just date them for a few weeks then dump them and move on. One of these days when you do find a girl you're meant to be with and you brush her off like some of the other women you date, you'll regret it and you'll lose her. You may have only one shot to be with her. Sure she'll cry and have her heart broken by you, but like all other people with broken hearts, she'll eventually get over it and move on to another guy who will treat her better. Someone worthy of her love. And when you realize that you love her and that she's the only girl in the world who makes sense in your life, it may be too late. Who knows, she might have found someone better for her and won't even want anything to do with you." "Andrew, you're starting to act like my mother! The last thing I need is for you to start lecturing me on matters of the heart. Mother already gave me the same lecture when I told her I'm never going to get married." "Aunt Nancy has every right to give you that lecture. She is growing older by the day and she would like to see her own son get married and give her some grandkids." "Andrew please!" Darien said at the mention of kids and the thought of how you get kids. With that thought, he blushed a crimson red. "Look Andrew, you're worrying over me for nothing. I'll never be bitten by the love bug. I don't believe in destiny, soul mates, or any other thing that's associated with love. Those type of things don't exist in reality no matter how hard you look for them." "You're such a skeptic, Darien." "So? Anyway, love is just not in the stars for me. Enough about me, when's the date of your wedding?" "June 10th" "Where?" "The huge garden at the mansion." "Are you in Boston right now?" "Yep." "Told your parents yet?" "They're thrilled." "When is Rita coming in?" "Her flight is tomorrow. I called her before I called you." "So how is everybody?" "They're all fine. I even stopped by Serena's house after I told my parents the good news." "You invited Serena to the wedding, didn't you?" "Yeah, of course! Why wouldn't I?" "Its just that she's the chauffeur's daughter. She isn't exactly a part of the same class as we are." "So?! She is MY friend and I can invite whoever I want to invite. My parents have no problem with her coming. Besides, both your parents and my parents love her! Serena and I have a special bond between each other. I love and care for her like a sister." "I always found it weird why you always seemed to be very close to the chauffeur's daughter." "Weird? In what way?" asked Andrew suspiciously. "Well, she isn't exactly the most attractive girl to be seen with, and with a bond that you two have, I thought it would make any woman you were dating at the time jealous." "Hey, what's with all this negative attitude towards Serena, huh?! She's never done anything to you. What I like about her is she doesn't try to be someone she's not. Sure she may look like she's as quiet and shy as a mouse on the outside, but when you REALLY get to know her, she's actually a sweet and charming girl. She's very intelligent and she speaks her mind. She's not your average run-of-the-mill girls, like the bimbos you date. She's a unique girl. All my other so-called "friends" are such fakes and phonies. With Serena, I can actually be myself without hiding the real me. All the girls I used to date, did get jealous of our close bond when there's absolutely nothing to be jealous of. That's why when Rita came into my life, she understands and trusts me. When I told her about how close I am with Serena, she never got jealous. The first time she met Serena, she loved her form the start." "Yeah, Rita was just happy to see that there's no competition between her and Serena," Darien said sarcastically. "Leave Serena alone! Okay, I'll admit that Serena looks a little like a nerd, but if you look deep enough, you'll see that she's truly a beautiful and remarkable girl to be with. I don't know what you have against Serena, but she has never been unkind to you. NEVER! Ever since we were kids to now. You know what? Serena and I were talking about you today. She was telling me how she couldn't understand why you hated her so much as we were growing up. I told her that you have matured a great deal than when we were kids, but I guess I was wrong. Since Serena is like a sister to me, I'll do whatever it takes to protect her from anybody who tries to hurt her. Whether it's physically or emotionally. If I have to, I'll even protect her from YOU! She doesn't need a snotty jerk like you to put her down." Darien just froze in his chair. He was too stunned and speechless to move or say anything after what Andrew had just told him. "Darien? Are you still there?" Darien finally snapped out of his trance-like state to continue talking. "Yeah, I'm here. I was just thinking about what you had just said to me a few minutes ago." "And?" "And you're right. Serena has never done anything to me. I have no right to put her down like I use to when we were growing up." "Darien, not only are you my cousin, but my best friend as well. I just hate it when you put such a nice girl like Serena down so much like you do. You just never gave her a chance. I don't know why, but you always pushed her away." "I don't know either, to tell you the truth." "Well, I better get going. I'll call you tomorrow, okay?" "Sure." "Bye." "Bye Andrew." When Darien and Andrew both got off the phone, Darien was now leaning back on his chair. He was pondering over what Andrew said to him. 'Why did I give Serena such a hard time growing up?' Darien thought to himself. 'She never did anything to me. In fact, she tried to be my friend.' As Darien thought over it some more, the door opened, and in walked his secretary. "Mr. Garrison, your sister, Ms. Garrison, is here for your 12:00 lunch.." "Send her in." Darien's secretary left and in came Lita Garrison. Lita Garrison is a long haired brunette, which was tied back into a high ponytail, with green emerald eyes, and a height of 5"9. Lita is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. Garrison and the sister of Darien. Lita is a famous model in Europe and the U.S. She flew in from Paris today to visit Darien. "Hey Darien! How have you been?" Lita said as she embraced her brother in a warm hug. "I've been better. And you?" "Fine also." "You ready to go for lunch? We can talk at the restaurant." "Sure." "How's your modeling job been doing?" asked Darien as they were eating lunch at The Olive Garden. "Great! I've been able to see the world with my modeling job. Yet, it's very lonesome being by yourself throughout most of the trips. I missed Mom, Dad, Aunt Faith, Uncle Ethan, Andrew, Serena, Daisy, Mark, and you." "Well, aren't you taking some time off?" "Mmhm." "That's good, because Andrew is getting married on June 10th." "Really? With Rita?" "Yep." "Wow! I'm very happy for them. Where's the wedding?" "At the mansion. It's going to be an outdoor wedding." "How romantic!!!!! Is he in Boston now?" "Yeah, he got in today." "Why don't we go to Boston today?!" "What?!" Darien choked out as he was coughing on his wine. "Are you alright?" Lita said with concern in her voice. "Fine. Are you crazy?! We can't go today." "Why not? I miss everybody there and we're going there anyway. Why not fly out today?" "I can't just up and go. You know I have a company to run which Dad entrusted to me to take care of." "Just ask your partner, Joe, to run it for you for a few months. You need a a vacation anyway. You hardly come home, Mom and Dad always want you to visit them, and you work too hard. You need to relax. Loosen up a bit." "I do take vacations." "Taking one day off is not a vacation, Darien. Come on! Don't tell me you're going to miss Andrew and Rita's wedding just to work are you?" "No." "So come on. Let's go home today after lunch. PLEASE?!" Lita pleaded. "Oh, alright," Darien grumbled. "Oh, thanks Dare!" Lita squealed excitedly as she got up from her chair to hug Darien. "Jeez, Lita! Calm down. You're making a scene." "Sorry," Lita said sheepishly as she sat back down to continue eating. When Lita and Darien were through with lunch, they first headed off to Garrison Computers so Darien could give his partner a list of things to do while he was gone, and to get some paper work he can do while he's in Boston. Next, they stopped by Lita's hotel to grab all her things and check out. Their last stop was Darien's apartment. Darien packed up a few things that would last the few months he was staying at Boston, and he called for a private jet to take them to Boston. As soon as Darien and Lita got out of his apartment, a black stretch limo was waiting for them to take them to the airport. When they finally got to the airport, they boarded the plane and were soon taking off. Once settled in, they were offered glasses of champagne by the flight attendant. "I can't wait to see everybody again," Lita sighed happily. "I'm glad someone's happy to be going home," Darien said tiredly. "Why? You don't want to see Mom and Dad?" "It's not that. It's just that Mom and Dad are on my back about finding a girl to settle down with. They keep lecturing me about how important it is to settle down and how they would like to have some grandkids before they die. It's just driving me crazy! I know they'll start lecturing me some more on marriage. They might even drill me some more on why I haven't been going home as often as they'd like me to. It's bad enough that they're lecturing me on marriage. I don't need them lecturing me on how I should be going home more. They always give me the guilt trip, thinking it would work on me." "Whoa, get a grip, Darien. Mom and Dad just want to make sure that you'll be in good hands when they pass away, that's all. They just don't want to see their only son alone and miserable. They care about you. Just like they care for me. They want what's best for us." "Well, I don't feel alone and miserable. I'm happy with the life I have. I've got my work, family, friends, you. What else do I need?" "How about love, Darien? Do you have that? Sure you have your work to keep you busy, your friends, me, and your family, but is that enough? All that can't give you what everybody needs. And that's love. Pretty soon, we won't be enough to fill the empty space in your heart. I worry about you sometimes, Darien. I love you, but you need to find someone who can make your heart whole. I don't want to see you grow old and die alone. You deserve to have a much better life than the one you're living right now." "Don't worry about me, Lita. Really, I'll be fine." "But just think about what I said, okay?" "Sure." For the rest of the flight, they talked a little bit on other subjects, but mostly doing their own thing. Lita, looking through magazines or reading a romance novel, and Darien, typing up some e-mail letters that has to deal with business on his laptop, or reading important paperwork. That's all minna!
