2. A member of the cast does or is made to do
something differently than the original storyline.
Examples: Ranma does not find Shampoo while looking
for the memory-restoring shampoo. Kunou's first challenge to the "pig-tailed
girl" really *is* a challenge rather than a "declaration to date."
Basically, any deviation that occurs (more or less) within
the story's original timeline. This is where it can drift into that "grey
area."
Would the cast's early childhood be considered
part of the original timeline? How about their pre-Jusenkyou teenage years?
That grey area depends on the reader. Personally, I think the answer to both those questions is yes, as far as events that directly affect them are concerned. World-affecting events (a deadly plague for example) would still make in an Alterverse
But it all still comes down to the reader. : )

Episodes
Author: "Ren'ai-chan"
Status: Suspended
Synopsis: You say you're a Ranma fanatic, so
you must know about the story in Book 17, the one where Nabiki gets Ranma,
right? Sure. Nabiki gets engaged to Ranma, sure that her cash flow will
increase. For her own amusement, she decides to profess her undying love
for him. Then, when Ranma gets over his blubbering shock and realizes it's
all a ruse, he swears revenge and lures Nabiki to the Garden Maze. In the
end, it all ends like it should and Ranma and Akane are back together.
Not so fast. Ranma never got back together with Akane. What are you talking
about? He and Nabiki have been the happily-betrothed couple for, oh, two
years now. And they were nothing like Ranma and Akane. They actually admitted
their feelings to each other. They were the typical high school sweethearts
-- went to movies, had their first kiss in a romantic spot by the Garden
Maze, were voted Prom King and Queen… And Akane? She went off
to college, allowing her older sister to progress in her relationship without
any impediments like ex-fiancees. But that's not how the story goes! you
sputter. Ranma and Akane are The Couple! They're going to end up together,
no matter what. Well, can't argue with that. This is the story of Akane's
first homecoming, and how her relationship with Ranma -- and Nabiki --
come full circle.
