"A Thousand Years" by Sting
****
A thousand years, a thousand more
A thousand times a million doors to eternity
I may have lived a thousand lives, a thousand times
An endless turning stairway climbs
To a tower of souls
If it takes another thousand years, a thousand wars,
The towers rise to numberless floors in space
I could shed another million tears, a million breaths,
A million names but only one truth to face

"Why do I love you?" she whispered in his ear while her hands circled his neck. Her fingers brushed through his long hair, each nerve in her body tingling at the feel of his bare skin. She shivered and leaned against him, sighing as she rested her head on his chest. She waited for the heat of his body to push away the coldness of the nighttime surrounding them. Curving in a frown, her lips brushed against the top of his shoulder, impatient and still waiting to be warmed. The coldness began to seep beneath her flesh. Her arms instinctively tightened around his neck, goosebumps quickly forming. She whimpered slightly, and mumbled into his shirt. "Darling?" She pressed her body flatly against his. "I am," she said, slowly lifting her face to meet his, "very," and she opened her eyes, "cold." One face met another face. And a scream ripped from her throat.
****
A million roads, a million fears
A million suns, ten million years of uncertainty
I could speak a million lies, a million songs,
A million rights, a million wrongs in this balance of time
But if there was a single truth, a single light
A single thought, a singular touch of grace
Then following this single point, this single flame,
This single haunted memory of your face

Noin shot in bed, her scream still echoing in her ears. She hunched over, a bead of sweat rolling down her face. Her widened eyes stared at the bedcover that was crumpled beneath her knuckles. She slowly began to shake her head from side to side, her nails digging into the coarse fabric. No, no, no, no.... It's not true. It's not true. Tears formed at the corners of her eyes as the image of his deformed and flesh-stripped face. Noin felt the bile rising in her throat. The sound of his cold and hollow voice broke her heart again. Her mind screamed again as his words pounded into her soul. Goodbye, Lucrezia. And then Zechs had just walked away from her, took her only love and strangled it. And she was left to grieve for what could have been.

I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head

She stepped onto the balcony. The wind picked up strands of hair and careless tossed them about. Brushing aside her tears, Noin sighed heavily and let her tired eyes drift closed. Her cheeks tingled as the chilly air prickled them. I am so stupid. Why didn't I see it coming? How could I not notice the distance between us? she scolded to herself. You are foolish, Lucrezia. Foolish! Her eyes reopened, searching the stars above her for an answer to all her questions, a solution to her problems. Though Noin knew in her heart that her future would not be intertwined with Zechs's, she clung to her dreams. And she hated herself for not being able to let go.

I may be numberless,
I may be innocent
I may know many things,
I may be ignorant
Or I could ride with kings and conquer many lands
Or win this world at cards and let it slip my hands
I could be cannon food, destroyed a thousand times
Reborn as fortune's child to judge another's crimes
Or wear this pilgrim's cloak, or be a common thief
I've kept this single faith, I have but one belief

"Oh God," she prayed, "please take away this pain." She leaned against the railing for support. One of her hands clasped a handful of her nightgown right above her heart. Her breath quickened. I can't stand it, she thought with fear welling up inside her. I can't! Noin stood still for a moment. Her eyes stared hopefully at the ground below her. Slowly, a small smile curved her lips for the first time in months. Time seemed to slow as she placed one foot on the railing and then another. Her body straightened for a moment and then swayed as the wind rushed around her. My only hope... Noin recoiled for a second. But her heart almost stopped when his face appeared before her in the black sky. His eyes, those icy blue eyes that held everything for her--hope, love, and life. Her hands reached out for Zechs, and she tumbled forward off the balcony .

I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times these mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head
On and on the mysteries unwind themselves
Eternities still unsaid
'Til you love me
