Sailor Mars is the sailor senshi whose powers are based on fire. Similarly, her temperament is also rather fiery and passionate. Sailor Mars has one of the strongest personalities in the entire Sailor Moon series, showing both her courage and integrity in battle, as well as her ambition and love for shopping in her private life. Sailor Mars, more than any other senshi, takes care of Sailor Moon--Who encouraged Sailor Moon to continue to fight after Tuxedo Kamen was taken by Fiore in the R movie? In that same movie, who threw Sailor Moon out of the way of danger so that at least she would escape? When Galaxia took the inner senshi's star seeds, which senshi was covering Sailor Moon? Mars on all 3.
As Rei Hino, she is virtually an idol at her private school, and very aggressive in pursuing her goals. This girl has no lack of self-esteem, although there are references that before becoming friends with Usagi, she was rather lonely. The self-motivated and ambitious Rei is a direct contrast to Usagi Tsukino, who is also the leader of the sailor senshi: Sailor Moon. As a result the 2 are constantly bickering over seemingly trivial things. Despite their frequent insult-wars, Rei and Usagi are very close friends, perhaps closer than any of the other senshi. They compliment each other very well: Rei reminds Usagi when to get serious, and Usagi helps Rei see the lighter sides of life. Usagi considers Rei very trustworthy and dependable--and a much harder worker than herself. Usagi respects Rei for such admirable qualities, even though she herself doesn't possess many of the same qualities.
Rei lives at her grandfather's temple--and is able to read fire. This ability is associated with the Shinto religion (Rei wants to become a Shinto priestess). Her ability often comes in handy, as sensing the presence or intent of an enemy enables the senshi to proceed with caution and be more alert. When Sailor Mercury's logic and reason fails, Sailor Mars' dependable intuition comes to the rescue--and I don't recall a time when Sailor Mars has been wrong about an enemy! As the most powerful of the inner senshi (besides Sailor Moon) and a dependable source to locate youma, Sailor Mars/Rei Hino is an important member of the sailor team.
