Yosho

Yosho was born into the Jurain Royal family. His mother, Funaho, is married to the Jurian emperor, Azusa. Azusa is also married to Misaki, Ayeka and Sasami's mother. Since Yosho is the eldest child of Azusa, he is first in line for the throne. For many generations Juraians did not marry to alien races. Azusa declared that from this point on Juraians could mix their blood with other races. This rule was opposed by many Juraians who saw it as their bloodline being tainted. Azusa saw it as a way to strengthen their race. Due to this political disagreement an obvious schism developed between those who opposed the law and those who embraced it. Azusa married Funaho, an Earthling. This was the first and most important interracial marriage on Jurai. After the birth of Ayeka, Misaki and Funaho, who are best friends, agreed to have their children marry. This arranged marriage would decrease disputes for power and the idea suited them well because of their friendship. The marriage also kept the Juraian empire from being split.

But Yosho did not want to deal with the problems that people would have with a half-Juraian taking the throne. When Ryoko, under the control of Kagato, was wreaking havoc on Earth he set off in Funaho (ship is named after his mother) to defeat Ryoko. During the fight with Ryoko, Funaho crashed into Earth, where the lake is now, near Tenchi's house. Yosho defeated Ryoko by removing the gems that give her her power. After removing the gems he managed to imprison Ryoko in a cave near the house. He placed his sword, named Tenchi (tenchiken), in the cave to keep her sealed inside. After defeating Ryoko he could not return home to Jurai because his spaceship tree was destroyed. The tree later grew into the Masaki tree and can be seen in many episodes. Once a Jurain tree roots itself in soil it cannot be used as a spaceship anymore. Although it cannot fly, his tree has kept him young ever since. His appearance has been altered by Tsunami, but its only a disguise. She did that because  it'd be a little weird that the old man who lives in the mountains never seems to age. He can cancel the surprise at will. Yosho met a young girl with whom he fell in love with.. He married her and took on the name Katsuhito Masaki. Through her he inherited the Masaki shrine.

Katsuhito and his wife only had one child. Her name was Achika. Achika's mother died when she was young. Yosho began to train Achika in swordplay so that she could return to Jurai in his place. However, Achika rejected her father's vision for her future in order to live a normal girl's life.

After Achika's desire not to ascend the throne Yosho waited 13 years. Then Tenchi was born he trained him as he did Achika and Tenchi proved to be a better Juraian knight than he was. Although Yosho has all this power, he does not interfere with Tenchi's life. Many times he could use his power so that Tenchi wouldn't have to but, if he did Tenchi would never gain the confidence and experience he needs.

Yosho's sword is the master key. Whenever a spaceship tree accepts a new owner they are given a part if its branch as a control device. The device is shaped to suit its new owner. Ayeka's is the tiara she wears on her head, Sasami's looks like a label-maker, and Yosho's is a sword. Because of his status as next in line for the throne he was given the Master Key. The Master Key can control any Juraian spaceship tree. An example of this would be Tenchi controlling Ayeka's ship in OVA 2. The sword also houses Ryoko's gems. During Yosho's battle with Ryoko he removed the gems and placed them in the hilt of the sword. Ryoko has managed to recover one of the gems when she convinced Tenchi to give them back.
