The Stars May Shine is a website dedicated to bringing you movie reviews of some of the movies I've seen. Use the navigation to the right to jump to the movie review you would like to read.

Ratings are based on a five-point star system. For example, five stars means this is a movie you have to see as soon as possible, buy the copy, and become a die-hard fan, if you haven't already. Zero stars means we should all send letters to the directors, actors, and producers of the film ordering them to drop dead for making such a bad film. I rarely give out either score, so don't worry about having to do much more than read the review and be persuaded.

The Last Unicorn

Summary:
The Last Unicorn (1982) is a story about a unicorn who one day finds out, by overhearing two hunters, that she is the last of her species. She learns, via Mr. Butterfly, that all of the unicorns were captured by the Red Bull. This causes her to go on a quest to find the rest of the unicorns.

The unicorn gets captured by Mommy Fortuna who runs a circus of "magical" creatures, most of which are normal animals with spells cast on them to make them look like mythological creatures. Schmendrick, a wanna-be magician who works for Mommy Fortuna, helps the unicorn escape and then accompanies her to find the rest of the unicorns.

As the pair wander through a forest, they get caught by a band of theives. With a little magic, Schmendrick gets them out of the situation. Molly, a thief's wife, sees the unicorn and insists on travelling with them on their quest.

They arrive at the castle where the Red Bull resides. The Red Bull then chases the unicorn around until Schmendrick is forced to use his magic to turn the unicorn into a human.

King Haggard and Prince Lir let the trio into the castle. Prince Lir falls in love with the unicorn, now named Lady Amalthea, and she eventually returns his love and forgets about saving the rest of the unicorns.

After some persuasion from Molly and Schemendrick, Amalthea remembers who she is and confronts the Red Bull and frees all of the unicorns.

Review:
This movie has a special spot in my heart since I watched it when I was six.

This movie is targeted at children, but can be enjoyed by adults as well. It has themes of greed, obsession, and doomed love, and in the end the unicorn sacrifices being in love for the good of everyone. The movie losses points for the sudden switch to a musical in the last twenty minutes, but overall this is a movie that makes people say, "Wow, that was actually really good."
