Vegeta, the arrogant prince of the sayian race comes into the story long ago when Gohan was still a boy. He had travelled the universe in search of the seven Dragon Balls, wanting to wish for immortality. On his journey accompanied by Nappa, Vegeta runs into Goku after a series of events. The prince is then defeated by Goku, and so "runs away" in a fashion. (If you can imagine Vegeta running away! Yeah right!) Later on, Vegeta forms a shaky alliance with the Z Fighters to fight Freeza on the planet Namek. Later, after Garlic Junior comes to earth and is defeated, Vegeta returns, and once again is forced to join the Z Fighters in the fight against a pair (or a trio) of diabolical androids fortold by a mysterious stranger from the future. Training for the upcoming battle, Vegeta then reaches the Super Saiyan level for the first time. Vegeta aids a great deal in this series, but is still not the strongest, which we all know makes him very angry. Much later, Vegeta enters a tournament so he can fight Goku. Unfortunately, this is messed up for him once again by the arrival of the Supreme Kai and a dark wizard named Babadi, bent on ressurecting Majin Buu. Vegeta then allows himself to be overtaken by Babadi because he realizes that this is the only chance he has to fight Goku. However, in the end, Vegeta discovers that Goku is stronger and good will always triumphs over evil, and he self-destructs in hopes of destroying Majin Buu. But then he is revived by King Yama to fight Buu. He even fuses with Goku with Goku to form Vegetto. Now, I don't know much about GT, but I'll tell you what I think I know. Someone named Bebi takes over Vegeta (does he have bad luck, or what?) and the prince is turned into Vegeta-Bebi. Evetually, after reaching SSJ 4, he fuses with Goku once again to form Gozita.
