A few days had passed. Erica tried to convince herself that it was for the better that he left, but deep down she still loved him. She didn’t mean to get so angry with him…a simple lecture turned into a fight, which turned into heartbreak. Her best friend, Shelby had heard the whole story, and tried to comfort her by saying that he wasn’t worth it. Erica heard her, but couldn’t listen.
It was a Saturday night, and Shelby had invited Erica to dinner. Shelby lived a few blocks down, and since it was a beautiful night, Erica walked. She and Shelby had been friends since the sixth grade, and she usually was the best person to talk to about problems.
Erica was at her house until 10:30 that night. “Do you want a ride home?” Shelby asked.
“No that’s okay. It’s not a long walk. I’ll be home in ten minutes.”
“Sure?”
“I’m sure. Thanks so much for dinner, it was great.”
“You’re welcome. I hope you feel better about that jerk of a guy.”
“I’ll get over him…” Erica glanced up at the ceiling for a moment. “Alright, I better get going. Bye Shel.”
“Oh, before I forget,” Shelby grabbed a piece of paper and a pen. “My number changed, so this is the new one.”
“Okay, thanks.”
“See ya later, Erica.”
Erica took the elevator down and stood outside the doors of the apartment complex. She looked up and saw the stars shinning brightly above. “Kaioshin…No I mustn’t think about him. He doesn’t need a ‘mortal’ like me…” Erica sighed to herself and started walking home.
Erica wasn’t more than a block away from her apartment building when she bumped into a man coming around the corner. “Excuse me,” she said and continued her way down the street. However, she noticed he was following her now. She picked up her pace, and he did the same. Finally she started running, and he caught up to her. She turned around and tried to hit him, but he threw her to the ground and started hitting her.
“Help!” Erica cried she tried to get away. However, the man lifted her only to throw her against a wall, knocking her out cold. In a few minutes, Erica was left alone on the sidewalk, badly hurt. A police officer making his rounds in his car noticed someone lying on the ground. He quickly got out, and called for an ambulance.
