Everybody sat at the table, except Cell, who leaned against the counter as usual. Lara was curious about what had happened. Mrs. Thomson explained. “I was sitting in the living room reading my book and Seru was watching TV. Then someone knocked on the door. When I opened it those men shoved their way in. Seru heard me scream and tried to fight them off. He gave one of them a bloody nose, but another one knocked him down. Then basically after that they searched the house and then you came home.”
“Well, at least you guys didn’t get hurt. That I’m thankful for,” said Lara.
“Daddy saved us!” Yelled Seru. “He was so cool. Did you see him Mommy? I bet he’s the strongest in the world!
Lara knew that Cell being the strongest in the world was a touchy subject, because that’s what he wanted to be. She quickly changed the subject to something that Seru didn’t want to hear. “It’s late Seru, you should go to bed.”
“Owe Mom, do I gotta? I want to stay up,” he whined.
“Yes, it’s almost ten. Come on. Let’s go.”
Seru hopped off his chair and walked over to Cell. He wrapped his arms around Cell’s legs for a hug. Cell didn’t know what to do except put his hand on his son’s head. Seru didn’t say anything, and he went to his room.
As Lara got up to follow him, Mrs. Thomson asked, “Are you going back out tonight?”
“No, it’s pouring out. And besides, I think I should stay here with Seru. Thank-you very much Mrs. Thomson,” said Lara.
“Okay then. Enjoy your night. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” Lara left the room and Mrs. Thomson gathered her things. As she was about to leave the house she paused and looked at Cell. Then she smiled. “Thank-you again. Take care of Lara and Seru; they need you in more than one way.” Then she left.
Cell watched her leave. Then Lara came back into the room. “Seru was really impressed with your power. I had a hard time getting him to calm down from his excitement.”
“I barely did anything,” replied Cell.
“To him, what you did was a big deal. He’s never seen someone shoot a beam out of their hand before. And then you didn’t even touch those men when you threw them out. I’m even impressed with it.”
Cell smiled and walked over to Lara. “So you want to stay here?”
“If you don’t mind. After what happened, I want you to be near the house. Just in case anything else happens.”
“I don’t think those men will come back here again.”
“You’re right. But we can still be together here.”
Cell’s response was picking Lara up. She wrapped her arms around him and they kissed in the kitchen for a while. Eventually they moved to Lara’s bedroom. During the night, Cell laid on his back with Lara cuddled up next to him. He was wide-awake thinking about how little time he had left with her. Lara wants me to spend time with Seru. I can do that first thing tomorrow morning. I’ll take him out while she’s still sleeping. But what can I do with him? I never played this father role before. Cell pulled Lara closer to him and continued to think until he finally fell asleep.
It was barely dawn. Cell woke up finding Lara with her arm around him. He lay there for a minute, and then decided to get up and take Seru out with him. He carefully slipped away from Lara as to not wake her, and quietly left the room. He opened Seru’s bedroom door and peered in finding the boy sprawled out on his bed. Cell stood next to the bedside and waited to see if Seru would wake up. He did.
“Daddy!” He said sitting up.
“Shh…your mother is still sleeping. Let’s go.”
“Where are we going?”
“I don’t know yet. Get dressed and quietly meet me in the kitchen.” Cell left Seru to get dressed and went into the kitchen. He searched for a piece of paper and a writing utensil. When he found what he was looking for he wrote:
Lara, I took Seru out for a while. We’ll be back before noon. ~Cell
He left the note on the table hoping she would see it. Then Seru came out. “I’m ready,” he said.
“Okay, let’s go.” The two walked outside, carefully shutting the door behind them. “I thought I’d take you for a flying lesson.”
“I’m too young to fly a plane,” Seru said.
Cell laughed. “You’re not going to fly a plane. I’m going to teach you how to fly.” Seru looked confused. “Come on.” Cell picked his son up for the first time. “Hang on.” He leapt into the air and took off. Unlike Lara was the first time; Seru wasn’t scared at all. He loved it.
“This is so cool! How can you fly?”
“I don’t know how I can, I just do. I’ll show you later. First, I thought I’d take you around the world.”
“Around the world?”
Cell didn’t respond. He flew as fast as he could. He went from Japan to Asia the to Europe. As they flew over the Atlantic Ocean, Cell started getting fancy with his flying. He swirled around and did summersaults. He dove down to the water and just before the hit it he flew straight back up. When they had gone completely around the world, Cell took him to a deserted area. He gently landed on the ground and looked at Seru. “So, how was that?”
“That was so much better than that roller coaster Mommy took me on! Can we do it again?!”
Cell laughed. “No; remember I was the one who was doing all the work,” he said, though he wasn’t tired in the least. “Now, how would you like to do that?”
“I can’t. I’m not like you.”
“If you’re my son, then you can do it. I’ll teach you.” It took about two hours for Cell to teach Seru how to fly. When Seru finally left the ground, he got so excited he lost his concentration and went crashing to the ground. Cell encouraged him to try again and eventually Seru got the hang of it. “Good job. Are you tired?”
“Not at all!” Seru said leaning over panting.
“Okay.” Throughout the morning Cell taught Seru how to fight. He taught him the basics to blasting mountains.
It was almost noon, and Seru was exhausted. Cell noticed that he couldn’t take anymore, so he stopped. “I think you need a brake.”
Hearing this, Seru dropped to the ground. Cell laughed and knelt down next to him. “Take it easy,” he said.
“I’m sorry. I’ll be better tomorrow. Then I’ll train with you some more.”
Cell stood back up. “Seru,” he started. “I won’t be here tomorrow.”
“Oh,” Seru said, “then when you come back I’ll be ready.”
“I won’t be coming back…”
“Huh? Why not?
Cell sighed. “Seru, how much did you mother tell you about me?”
“She said you had gone away after a tournament.” Seru remembered the day she told him that…
“Mommy, I was wondering.”
“About what?”
“Do I have a Daddy?”
Lara laughed. “Of course you do.”
“Where is he then?”
“Well, your Daddy was in a tournament, and after the tournament he had to go away.”
“Oh. When will he come back then?”
“I don’ know…”

Cell couldn’t decide whether he should tell Seru the truth or not. “Seru, I’m not as good as you think I am. Before the tournament you were told about, I killed a lot of people. I was selfish and wanted nothing but power. I thought I was the strongest being alive and that no one could defeat me. That’s why I held the tournament. Then, someone did beat me.”
“So you left because you were ashamed?”
“No,” said Cell. “I was killed.”
“You died? Then how come you’re not in heaven?”
“I never was in heaven. I was in the other place. I was able to come back for 24 hours to see your mother. I didn’t know you existed. But those 24 hours are almost up, and then I have to go, and I won’t be able to ever come back. Do you understand?”
“Yes.” Seru got up off the ground and flew up to his father, throwing his arms around his neck. “I’m going to miss you, Daddy.”
“I’ll miss you too. I’m sorry to do this to you. At first I didn’t want to believe that you were my son. Now that’s changed. I taught you how to fight so you can protect your mother if she or yourself are ever in trouble. But whatever you do, don’t make the same mistake I did. Use your power wisely.”
“I will.”
