A few days after Tyra was born, she and Lara had come home. Lara was very tired and spent most of the time in bed resting. It was up to Cell to take care of everything else. It was almost 6:30 a.m. and Seru needed to get ready for school. Cell got up, trying not to disturb Lara. He walked down the hall and into Seru and Mikau’s room. The two boys slept on bunk beds; Seru on top and Mikau on the bottom. Cell poked Seru until he sat up. “Get up,” he said.
Seru rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. “Can I please stay home? Please?”
“It would be fine with me, I don’t care. But your mom would kill me.”
Seru mumbled to himself as he hopped down to the floor. Cell walked back out and went to the kitchen. He saw a note on the table.
Don’t forget to feed Tyra. If you do forget, she’ll remind you.
Cell almost forgot about feeding Tyra. Lara had shown him how to do so when she came home. He looked around the kitchen. Lara had left the bottle and formula all ready to be heated up. Cell fumbled around the kitchen trying to remember what he had to do. I’m not supposed to be doing this stuff, he thought. He put the bottle in a small pot and put that on the stove, and turned it onto warm. If that’s not right then too bad. He went to get Tyra, and then brought her back to the kitchen. He sat on the edge of a chair and held her on his lap. “I hope you’re hungry, kiddo.” She laughed and held out her arms. He raised her in the air and she laughed more.
Seru walked into the kitchen with his backpack and dropped it next to the door. “Umm, Dad?”
“What?” Cell asked, still playing with Tyra.
“Is that supposed to do that?” Seru pointed to the bottle, which started to expand.
Cell jumped up when he saw the bottle. He ran over and grabbed it to put it in the sink, but before he could do so he burned his hand on it. He tried not to yell so he wouldn’t wake Lara up. He waved his hand in the air as if it were on fire and he was putting out the flames. Tyra then started to cry because she wasn’t getting any attention and also because she was hungry. Cell tried to calm her down.
“Hey Dad? Can you make me eggs?” Seru asked.
“I want French toast!” Mikau said running into the kitchen.
“Quiet! I’m not making anybody anything. Find something simple. I’m having enough trouble as it is.” Cell tested the bottle to see if it was still hot, and of course it was.
“Mom usually makes us something,” Seru said crossing his arms.
Cell turned around with a disgusted look on his face. “Well, I’m not your mother! And she’s trying to sleep, so be quiet…” He looked up and saw Lara standing in the kitchen entrance.
She smiled and walked over to Cell, taking the crying Tyra out of his arms. Tyra stopped crying as soon as her mother picked her up. Lara turned on the faucet to cold and held the bottle under the running water until the bottle cooled off. Cell stood there with his mouth partly opened. She just comes in and everything is okay, he thought. Lara handed Tyra back to Cell and put the bottle in his hand. She showed him how to give Tyra the bottle, and then went to the cabinet. She took out two boxes of cereal and put them on the table in front of Seru and Mikau. Next she got down two bowls and took out two spoons from the drawer. “Get the milk if you want it,” she said to them. Then she sat down on a chair and folded her hands on the table. She looked at Cell with a smile.
He growled to himself and looked at the bottle. It was almost empty. “You finished already?” He said to his daughter. It wasn’t long before she finished the whole thing. Cell held it up in front of him to make sure it was all gone. “Let me guess. You want more, right?”
“You need to burp her now,” Lara said.
“I need to what?”
Lara got up and positioned Tyra over Cell’s shoulder. “Gently pat her back until she burps.”
“Gently,” Cell said sarcastically under his breath. He patted the baby’s back for what seemed like hours. “How long does it take her?”
“It could take a long time,” Lara said with a smile.
“I’m done.” Seru wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
“You better get ready, and your father will take you,” Lara said.
“What?” Cell asked.
“You heard me. You’ll have to take him to school. I can’t drive him.”
“He knows how to fly, let him go by himself.”
“Sorry, but he’s only five years old, Cell. Give Tyra to me and I’ll burp her.”
Cell mumbled to himself and handed the baby over to her. “Let’s go then,” he said in an unhappy voice.
“This will be fun,” Seru said picking up his backpack. He hopped up onto Cell’s back and wrapped his arms around his neck.
Just as Cell opened the door, he heard a small burp. He turned around and looked at Tyra. Lara tried not to laugh. Cell continued to growl to himself and walked out the door. “I hope you know your way,” he said to Seru.
“Sort of,” the boy said back.
“Wonderful.” Cell flew in the way Seru pointed. They were flying for about five minutes when Cell asked him if they were close.
“Yeah, there’s the big flag over there.” Cell flew to the flag. When they got to the school, Cell landed on the roof of the building. “How do I get down?” Seru asked.
“Jump.” Cell said.
“What if somebody sees me? Mommy said I should show off my abilities like that. Could you bring me down?”
“You’re being a pain,” Cell said. He wasn’t in the mood to argue so he flew down to the ground.
As Seru jumped off his back, some other kids said, “Wow! Look at that guy!” “Hey Seru! Who’s that?”
Seru ran over to his friend. “That’s my dad,” he said proudly.
Cell didn’t stick around; he quickly flew away.
The other kids stood there with their mouths open and their eyes wide. “That’s your dad?”
When Cell returned home, he found Mikau playing with Tyra, who was sitting in a highchair. “Hi ya Dad,” Mikau said.
“Where’s Lara?” Cell asked.
“She went back to bed and said all you had to do was put Tyra to bed around noon time for a nap.”
“That’s easy enough. Play with her until then.”
“I was going out to fly around though.”
“Well, bring her with you.”
“I’d be scared I’d drop her.”
Cell gritted his teeth. “Then don’t go flying…”
“But…”
Cell’s fist tightened. “I said...” he said between his teeth.
“I think I’ll go watch TV…” Mikau ran off with Tyra into the living room.
“Good idea,” Cell said to himself. He didn’t know what to do now. He decided to wait outside until noontime.
At noon Cell went back inside in order to put Tyra to bed for her nap. Mikau still watched TV, mostly because he didn’t know what kind of trouble he’d get in if he tried to do anything else. Cell took Tyra from Mikau and brought her down to his bedroom. He hovered into the room so the squeaking of his feet wouldn’t wake Lara. He placed Tyra in her crib and started to leave. Then he started to hear a small cry. He quickly moved back to the crib and tried to hush Tyra up. “Shhh…go to sleep.” He put his finger in front of her to make her stop crying. She laughed and pulled his finger into her mouth. “Tyra…” he yelled in a whisper. “Go to sleep!”
Then he felt an arm wrap around his waist. He looked to his right and saw Lara standing next to him. “You don’t have to whisper,” she said.
“You’re awake,” he said. She nodded and replaced Cell’s finger with a pacifier in Tyra’s mouth.
“She’ll go to sleep if we leave her alone,” Lara said quietly.
“I hope so,” Cell commented. Lara led him away from the crib.
“I’m proud of you,” Lara said to him.
“For what?”
“You’ve learned a lot.”
Cell gave a quick laugh. “I’m glad I’m not you; I couldn’t handle this everyday.”
Lara laughed and placed a finger over his mouth. She ran her hand over the side of his head. “I love you,” she said softly. Cell smiled and leaned down to kiss her. They kissed until Mikau ran into the room.
“Isn’t Seru supposed to come home now?” He asked.
Lara laughed and Cell got the hint. He kissed her one more time and left to pick up Seru. He waited on the roof of the school until he saw Seru walk out. He flew down and told him to quickly jump up onto his back. Seru did so and they flew home. When they returned Mikau was outside waiting for his brother. Seru jumped down and ran to play with Mikau. Cell let out a big sigh and returned to Lara. She sat on the bed holding Tyra.
“I thought she was taking a nap.” Cell said walking into the room.
“She had a dirty dipper and wouldn’t go back to sleep.”
Cell took the baby from Lara and held her in the air. “You’re going to sleep now whether you like it or not.” He placed her back into the crib and she starred at him. It wasn’t long before her eyes started to close. Cell waited to make sure she didn’t open them again and slowly backed away.
“See,” Lara said. “You’re getting the hang of it.”
“I suppose.” Cell sat on the bed next to Lara. She leaned up against him and closed her eyes.
“I finally have the family I’ve always wanted,” she said.
“But you didn’t expect to end up with someone like me.”
“Well, no, but I’m glad I did.” Lara leaned up and kissed him.
