When he shows up in Tomoeda/Reedington, he demands that Sakura give him The Clow Book. That was a bad idea because her brother, Touya/Tori, comes to her rescue. Since then, Touya and Shaolan have been enemies. However, he and Sakura make peace eventually and work together to capture the Clow Cards. He often ends up saving her or helps her figure stuff out. He is good at identifying the cards and thinking up solutions too.
Shaolan has a crush on Yukito/Julian, and is always running away, falling over or forgetting what he's about to say whenever Yukito/ Julian turns up. This is how he earned the title of "Sakura's Rival" from Tomoyo/Madison. However he then realises that he is only attracted to the magical powers that Yukito/Julian's true self possesses.
He slowly falls in love with Sakura, and blushes whenever she's around her. He loses his crush on Yuki/Julian to persue her in the Sakura/Star season and at the end of the series admits to Sakura that he has a crush on her. In the Second Movie, Sakura tells Shaolan of her feelings towards him after Shaolan gives up his most precious feeling (his love for Sakura) in order to save everyone. Luckily Sakura prevails and prevents him losing his memories of love for her and tells him that she will always love him.
One of his child-hood friends is Meilin who has a massive crush on Li but usually annoys him. He has great patience with her and is often very sweet. Their friendship goes back to when they trained together in Hong Kong. Meilin lost her pet bird and was really upset. Li ran out into the rain and brought it back.
Although Meilin is his cousin, she is part of the Rae family and so has no magical powers. Li feels that this she is useless against the Clow cards and is usually rather mean to her.
Shaolan and Meilin are actually engaged, but after Li falls in love with Sakura, Meilin decides to break off the engagment since she knows that Li is not in love with her.
While searching for Clow Cards in Japan, he stays with Wei, his mother’s cousin. Wei is kind and is willing to help Li and Meilin, who visits Li a lot. He knows about the Clow cards but doesn’t interfere with Shaolan’s quest, him having no magical powers. Back home in Hong Kong, Li lives with his mother and 4 insane sisters. His mother is a very strict and traditional woman who everyone respects and is feared by some. She has strong magical powers much greater than Shaolan’s and he often feels that he is not doing well enough. However, she understands that Shaolan’s power’s will never be as great as Sakura’s and is proud of her son just the way he is.
Unlike their mother who often wears traditional clothing, Shaolan’s sisters are fashionable, cute and loving freaks. They are all in their late teens making Shaolan the baby of the family. None of them appear to have magical powers and prefer to look for cute boys rather than work hard. They all respect their mother but don’t feel her judgement on them like Shaolan does.
Shaolan's also Sakura's classmate and had the honour to sit right behind Sakura. Most of the time, he has this serious look and doesn't smile a lot, much less laugh. Then he begins to blush a lot too. Shaolan doesn't talk a lot either and gets on with his schoolwork. As well as being a great martial artist, he is quite clever getting grade A from most of his teachers.
Other than practising with his sword and soccer etc, he got his exercise by running away from the people he secretly fancies. He is able to jump onto the tree branches, instead of climbing. Like Sakura, he learns things fast, like skiing, ice-skating, etc.
Li and Kero have a love-hate relationship. Li may be the direct descendant of Clow Reed, but Kero wants Sakura to have all the cards. Li refers to Kero as a stuffed toy and in return Kero calls Li little boy.
Li is a very serious child and finds it hard to show his feelings. He is a tough fighter and is very determined. However, his powers are no match for Yue and he is easily beaten.
