Study

      The room was dark except for the light coming from the lamp above the desk where the dark haired boy scribbled away. Across the room, lying on the lower bed, was a rather bored Daisuke, his evening plans having been put on hold. To pass the time, he had begun tapping his socked foot on the ladder leading to the top bunk and nodding his head to some unheard music, and being thusly occupied, Daisuke failed to notice that the intense pencil scratchings had ceased, Ken’s pencil held only a few millimeters above the paper, his body tense and unmoving, his eyes closed, focused on some internal point.

      “Daisuke!” finally came the exasperated response. Daisuke’s head snapped to attention as his eyes turned to find a very annoyed Ken, who could not help but find some small humor in Daisuke’s sad puppy dog face. Ken closed his eyes for another moment, this time in an attempt to not let his amusement show, knowing full well that Daisuke would use that against him.

      “I have to study…” he reminded the younger boy for the third time that day. Daisuke gave a short chuckle.

      “And they say you’re the genius.” Ken looked once more to the complex equations he was suppose to be solving before turning back to Daisuke with a resigned smile, who was now well aware of the fact that, this time, he had won.
