Protective Brothers
Jorge tossed around in his bed. It seemed obvious that something disturbed him, but he continued tossing around despite wanting to wake up. He finally woke up when lights shined through his window, his eyes shot open. He thought nothing of the lights. He knew it was just his mother coming home late from work, and tried to go back to sleep.
He woke up again, hearing several male voices just outside the front of his house. The boy got out of bed and walked up to the window, curious as to what was going on. His eyes widened as he saw his father along with several boys and men much younger than man being surrounded dressed in black attire. Jorge just heard the voices, but couldn't make out what they were saying.
One of the boys suddenly stabbed Jorge's father with a knife in his back. The other gangsters started beating the man and threw him onto the ground, and continued kicking him while he was down, the knife still embedded in the man's back. Jorge was silent, unsure of how to react. He felt helpless as he watched the gangsters continue to beat his father up, brutally.
They suddenly stopped, and one of the men, apparently the leader, looked as if he was asking a question. Then, there was a long pause as they seemed to be listening to a response. The leader slowly pulled his gun out and aimed down at the fallen man. Jorge watch the leader fire 5 shots down at his father.
"NOOO!!" Jorge cried out. However, that proved to be a mistake as one of the gang members heard him, and turned toward the window he was looking out. He reached down for a gun and aimed towards Jorge.
Jorge suddenly sat up in bed and looked around, seeing Tapirmon was lying down right next to him. He then just palmed his head as he tried to calm down from seeing what he did. "Padre," Jorge muttered. The boy suffered from these nightmares regularly. As many times as he goes through it, though, it really shakes him up.
Tapirmon stirred a bit and looked up at his partner, lying to where it looked like he was still asleep. This became a regular occurrence that the digimon has gotten used to.
Please, Jorge, Tapirmon thought. Just let it out. Whatever is bothering you, just let it out. Tapirmon had been concerned about Jorge's behavior. Right now, Jorge looked like he just wanted to cry, but even when he thinks he's alone, he manages to hold it in.
Jorge slowly got out of bed like he was trying not to wake the digimon next to him up. Tapirmon just sighed as he walked out of the room, knowing full well that it was useless to try to talk to him about it. Jorge always avoided any talk about his emotions.
Jorge looked around in the dark living room. He saw a name badge amongst some other items that were laying on the table. Obviously, his mother just got home not too long ago from work, having to work 2 jobs just to keep the family afloat for the past 5 years. Jorge couldn't help but feel sorry for her, but knew there was nothing he could do until 5 years from now. At least, then, he could drop out and get a job to help support Victoria.
He, then, walked towards Victoria's bedroom door, which cracked open. Jorge looked into his sister's room to see her sleeping in bed with Terriermon. She was holding onto Terriermon like she would a stuffed animal. Terriermon didn't seem to mind, and had wrapped her left ear around the young girl. Jorge just couldn't help but think of how cute that looked. One thought passed through his mind as looked at the two sleeping forms. At least, she didn't have to feel the pain of losing Dad.
Ms. Gonzalez walked through the living room of her house the next morning, having prepared for her first job that day. Her children had already gone to school about an hour ago, and she had a little time before she had to leave. Juanita walked into her daughter's room to make sure her bed was made and everything was tidied up. She sighed as she saw that the bed looked fine and that the floor was cleared, except for a pile of stuffed animals next to the bed.
"RAR!!!" Terriermon jumped out of the pile of stuffed animals and landed on the bed. Juanita screamed, freaking out as the young digimon surprised her. Terriermon started laughing and rolling around on Victoria's bed.
The woman just sighed as she realized who it was, a smile coming across her face. Terriermon always enjoyed playing around like this, which was something she became used to after having them around for over a month. At least, she lightened the mood around the house a bit.
"Is Terriermon being a nuisance again?" Tapirmon asked, standing at the door. He had heard the event transpire from Jorge's room.
"She's fine. Don't worry about it, Tapirmon. Let her have her fun," Juanita replied. Then, she looked at Tapirmon, noticing something odd. She walked out of her daughter's room and into the living room. "Are you okay, Tapirmon? You seem disturbed about something."
"I'm curious as to what's wrong with Jorge. He woke up in the middle of the night last night, and he appeared to be disturbed by something. I don't recall him ever returning to bed."
Juanita shook her head, not believing that her son still bore the scars from an event 6 years ago, something she would've noticed a long time ago had she had more time with her children. "Did Jorge ever tell you what happened 6 years ago?"
"No," Tapirmon replied.
"When he was 5, his father was killed by the gang members around here. Jorge has been holding everything in ever since, something I should have noticed."
"It seems like Jorge's and my pasts are the same," Tapirmon said with a sigh.
"What was that?" the woman asked.
"Nothing that I feel like talking about,"
"By the way, I have something that I'm concerned about, and that's why you're here and supposedly partnered with my children," the mother asked.
"It's known that Terriermon and I are partnered with your children because of a threat to both of our worlds," Tapirmon explained.
"Just what I need, my kids to be in more danger than they already are," Juanita sighed.
"I understand your concern, Ms. Gonzalez, but it is also our duty to protect your children to our fullest. You do not need to worry about their safety."
Juanita just nodded. She was relieved at that assurance, but still couldn't help be concerned. Not only do they have to deal with the local gang, but they have to deal with some threat from another world.
"Hey, Vickie. My parents wanted to see if you would like to go to a movie sometime this weekend. You want to come?" a girl about Victoria's age asked in Spanish. Victoria walked out of the school with one of her friends.
"Sorry, I can't," Victoria replied.
"Why? You never go anywhere other than home or school. You need to get out of the house."
"It's not like I have much of a choice," Victoria explained. "I don't think your parents would even want to go near my house and my mom works most of the time."
"I understand," the girl said, with a depressed look on her face. The girl looked around as she noticed that despite the crowds being around, Victoria and she found a vastly open area in the walkway. The girl looked around and finally saw Victoria's brother. He showed absolutely no emotion, his eyes just seemed to stare blankly at the two girls. The older boy just stood there with his arms dangling to the side. "I gotta go catch my bus. I'll see you later, Vickie." Victoria's friend walked off rather quickly.
Victoria walked up to her brother, smiling at him. "Hola, hermano," she greeted.
"Hola, Victoria," Jorge said. Jorge then turned around and walked along with his little sister, trying to get home as quick as possible.
Jorge and Victoria breathed heavily as they quickly got into the house. Jorge slammed the door quickly and locked it. Someone started beating on the door shortly afterwards. At the time, Jorge was very glad the gang members were smart enough not to carry guns in broad daylight. Then, he was proven wrong as he heard a familiar clicking noise. "Victoria! Hide!!" Jorge yelled.
Victoria ran for her bedroom as Jorge jumped over and behind the sofa. He was praying softly that the punks wouldn't find them. Then, Jorge heard the sound of footsteps running away. He stayed there for a while longer, making sure they were all gone. He was reassured when he heard a car drive by in front of the house. They had run from the cops again.
"It's clear," Jorge said aloud. Victoria walked out of her room with Terriermon sitting on her head. Tapirmon also came out of Jorge's room.
"Are you alright, Jorge?" Tapirmon asked.
"I'll be fine, Tapirmon. Those bastards just had us on the run," Jorge replied. "I'll e-mail mother about it."
Jorge's and Victoria's D3's started to act on their own suddenly. Jorge's D3 was a dull gray with a black grip, while Victoria's D3 was blue with a white grip. Tapirmon looked at the computer monitor and saw that the Digital Gate was open. "You may want to take a rain check on the e-mail. It's time to go."
Victoria looked at her brother, as if asking what to do. "No choice," Jorge said.
"Just aim your D3's at the screen," Tapirmon said.
The two humans nodded and aimed their D3's for the computer monitor. The Digital Gate reacted and drew in both humans and both digimon.
Jorge and Victoria fell forward as they came out of the monitor, landing face first in sand. Terriermon couldn't help but laugh at the two. Tapirmon glared at the younger digimon. She immediately quit laughing, saying, "I'll shut up, now."
Jorge got up and brushed the sand off of him, spitting some out of his mouth. Then, he helped his sister up and brushed the sand off of her. "You okay, Victoria?" Jorge asked.
Victoria immediately spit sand out and shook her head in reply. The sand getting all over Terriermon. It was Victoria's turn to laugh, seeing her partner covered in sand.
"Wasn't Tapirmon glaring at me enough punishment?" Terriermon asked.
Jorge took a look around the area they were at. The area seemed to be a small beach of sorts. There was a cliff area further up the coast. There was some grassy area only a few feet inland from the water.
"Great vacation spot," Victoria remarked.
"Considering the trouble here. No, it isn't," Tapirmon replied.
"So, what are we supposed to do?" Jorge asked. Just as Jorge asked that, Jorge's D3 started to flash again. "Not again..." Jorge said.
The terminal the Gonzalez kids came out of flashed, but instead of drawing them all in again, 2 older kids came out of it. The boy, who appeared to be older than the girl that was with him, landed on his feet, while the girl landed in the sand face first.
Victoria walked up to the girl and squatted down, looking at her in concern. "Are you okay?" Victoria asked.
The girl looked up and was surprised to see the little girl in front of her. "I'm fine," the girl got up and dusted herself off. "I assume you're from San Antonio?"
"Yes. How'd you know?" Victoria asked.
"You're not the only one from there that's partnered with a digimon. We've been trying to find you lately, and hopefully unite the other members of your team. By the way, my name is Lisa McCross," the girl introduced herself.
"My name is Victoria Gonzalez, but my friends call me Vickie," Victoria introduced herself. Then, Terriermon walked over to Victoria's side.
"Aww...how cute? Is this Terriermon your partner?" Lisa asked.
Victoria nodded. "She's cute? How about me?" a feminine voice said. Alraumon walked up by Lisa's side.
"Alraumon! It's good to see you again," Lisa said.
"Rick? Rick! Snap out of it will ya?" another voice said.
"Jorge, what's wrong?" Tapirmon asked.
The girls' attention were turned to the boys. A Pico Devimon and Tapirmon were both trying to get their partners' attention. However, Rick was glaring down the younger boy. Jorge stared back with his normal blank stare. What is with this kid? Rick thought, having a bad feeling about Jorge, since he didn't show any fear or annoyance.
"Hermano? What's going on?" Victoria asked, confused as to what just happened.
"Not again..." Lisa groaned. "Rick, will you lighten up?"
"I wouldn't be surprised if Jorge started it. He's not the best people person around," Victoria remarked.
Lisa looked at the younger girl curiously. "Doesn't he have any friends at all?" Lisa asked.
"Nope, none that I know of," Victoria replied. "Most people at school avoid him, even my friends."
"Not much of friends, are they?" Lisa remarked. "Wanna walk down the beach? I'm sure they're not gonna break out of their staring contest anytime soon."
"Sure," Victoria chirped. Lisa couldn't help but giggle. The girl seemed so innocent. It was a shame that she had to be dragged into whatever war this team had. Then, again, she remembered when she was dragged in. She was as lost as this girl was when she started out.
The two girls started to walk up the shoreline towards the cliff area. It seemed to be a great place to get a view. Alraumon and Terriermon walked right behind them. As much as they felt this was a bad idea, they felt that they should still be by their partners.
"I just don't understand my brother," Victoria explained, finally breaking the silence between the two girls. "He keeps talking about our father as if he would've made a difference now. I have no clue about that. I never knew him."
"You never knew your father?"
"He died before I could." Victoria got a solemn look on her face.
"I'm sorry," Lisa asked.
"Don't worry about it. You didn't know," Victoria said.
"Well, Vickie. If you ever want to talk about something, I can give you my e-mail. From what I see, you're brother isn't the best person to confide in, I don't know how you can stand him," Lisa said.
"I can stand him because he protects me," Victoria answered. "We don't live in a good neighborhood. In fact, we live in a gang's turf, apparently."
"Now, I really feel sorry for you," Lisa remarked.
"Why?" Victoria asked.
"Because you're being dragged into some war and you both go through enough problems in the real world, living in a gang territory. It just doesn't seem fair."
"We've managed to survive so far. I'm sure everything will be fine."
Lisa couldn't help but stare at the girl. For someone that has gone through some hard times, she sure seems optimistic, Lisa thought.
"Meteor Squall!!"
Lisa looked up in surprise, seeing the barrage of meteors falling down on them. Victoria screamed at the sight. Lisa grabbed hold of the younger girl as the meteors fell around them.
The attack caught the attention of Jorge and Rick, finally breaking from their little staring match. The two called out to their respective sisters as they noticed their sisters were in the line of fire.
"Blast Laser!!" Several ring-shaped lasers came down on the boys. Both of them jumped out of the way of the attack. Aquilamon turned around and prepared to dive down at them.
"Oh, no, you don't," Rick said, as Pico Devimon was engulfed in a pillar of light.
"Pico Devimon, evolve!!" When the light dissapated, in Pico Devimon's place was a small human. He wore clothing that made him seem like a Western wizard. "WIZARMON!!"
"Thunder Cloud!!" Wizarmon formed an orange ball and shot it off at Aquilamon. Aquilamon easily dodged the attack, however.
"Glide Horn!!" Aquilamon came down on Wizardmon, just about to come into close-range.
"Magical Game!!" Wizarmon immediately multiplied itself and the attack went straight through one of the images.
As the meteors stopped, Lisa looked around for the attacker, but Victoria was the first to notice.
"It's that thing that attacked the Riverwalk!" Victoria pointed out.
"You are so dead for attacking us," Lisa remarked.
"Alraumon, evolve!!" Alraumon was engulfed in the pillar of light as she began to evolve. When she appeared, she was now what looked like some sort of green vegetable with two tentacles. "Zassoumon!!"
Zassoumon immediately wrapped Starmon up with her tentacles. "Squeeze Pine!!" Zassoumon tried to squeeze Starmon, rendering him helpless, so it seemed. Starmon used his arms to break free of the grip. "What?!" Zassoumon said in surprise. Then Starmon rushed forward and punched Zassoumon in the face.
"Looks like you don't need me to pick on this weakling," Revolmon said as he came up behind Starmon.
"Another one?" Victoria asked.
Tapirmon looked as if something was bothering him. It was strange that Jorge hadn't taken notice of this, but Tapirmon was looking really ticked off. "These...guys..." Tapirmon said. His mind started flooding with memories he wish he would just forget.
"You can take the girl with the Terriermon if you want," Starmon said.
"My pleasure," Revolmon said, as he started to take aim. Terriermon stood in the way, hoping she'd be able to block the attack.
That was when Jorge snapped. "I don't think so. You are NOT attacking my sister. Tapirmon!!"
"I'm way ahead of you!!" Tapirmon said, as he started to charge towards Revolmon. Another pillar of light started to envelope around Tapirmon as Jorge's D3 reacted. "Tapirmon, evolve!!"
When the light subsided, a large flaming boar appeared out of the light. "BOARMON!!"
"Bullet Attack!!" Boarmon charged straight at Revolmon in a blind rage. As if mocking him, Revolmon just side-stepped the attack. Boarmon slide and managed to turn himself back towards Revolmon. "Nose Blaster!!" Boarmon let out the fire attack at Revolmon. Revolmon was engulfed by the fire.
"Justice Bullet!!" A bullet went straight through the fire and hit Boarmon. The boar digimon fell to the ground, out of commission.
"Boarmon..." Jorge said, his eyes went wide in horror. He saw Boarmon lay down, deathly still.
"Hermano..." Victoria said as she saw her brother's partner. "These digimon. They're no better than the guys that picked on us earlier." Looking over at Jorge, who was just sitting there, traumatized. "Please, hermano, snap out of it."
"Vickie, what's wrong with him?" Lisa asked.
"I don't know," Victoria replied.
"Just like...Father..." Jorge said in Spanish.
Rick finally took notice of Jorge's entranced state. He walked over to Jorge as his partner continued his battle with Aquilamon. "Hey, kid. Snap out of it," he said, shaking Jorge. "Are you okay?"
"Padre..." was Jorge's only response.
"What are you muttering?" Rick asked. "C'mon. This isn't the time to..."
"Rick!!" Lisa yelled out.
Rick had to tackle Jorge to the ground and out of the way of a rocky fist. The fist slammed down onto the ground where the two were standing previously.
Wizarmon lost his concentration in his fight for a short while, concerned about his partner. However, that was long enough to give Aquilamon the opening he needed. "Glide Horn!!" Aquilamon rammed into Wizarmon head-on. Wizarmon just fell to the ground, reverting to his child form from the lack of energy.
Golemon turned around and looked down on the two boys, preparing to crush the two. "Get away!!" Victoria yelled, glaring at the monstrous golem. "I don't see what we did to you to deserve this, but this is enough. Leave us alone!!"
"Where's the fun in that?" Golemon asked.
Fun?! They think this is fun? Victoria thought.
Terriermon couldn't help but get as angry as her partner was. She of all people would know what fun is, and this was sure as hell not fun. The odds seemed against them, but for some reason, Terriermon didn't care.
A pillar of light engulfed Terriermon, as Victoria's D3 started to glow. "Terriermon, evolve!!" As the light started to subside, a rabbit-like creature appeared. Her ears were both made of metal as were her oversized metal claws. Of course, the evidence that she wasn't a rabbit was that her tail was slightly elongated. "PRAIRIEMON!!"
Prairiemon rushed at Golemon at sonic speeds. She jumped into the air and tried to slash down on Golemon with her claws. However, the claws did nothing as they came down on the rock-hard body of Golemon. She flipped back and landed on her feet, then flung her ears forward. "Sonic Ear!!" Prairiemon sent out sonic waves of energy towards Golemon, the waves slicing into the rock.
Golemon just turned around and started to emit some sort of mist from it's back. "Curse Crimson!!" The mist started to spread out towards Prairiemon. Not expecting an attack like this, she ended up breathing it in, and lost her bearings.
"Golemon Punch!!" Golemon's fist came down on Prairiemon, forcing her to revert to her child form.
"Terriermon!!" Victoria shouted in concern, but Terriermon didn't get up.
"We're screwed," Lisa remarked.
"DESTRUCTION GRENADE!!" As Lisa said that, a grenade landed between Starmon and Revolmon. The two digimon jumped out of the blast range as the grenade exploded.
"Ice Strike!!" "Thunder Bomber!!" Icemon and Thunderballmon struck Starmon and Revolmon respectively, slamming the two enemy digimon into the ground.
"Lisa, Rick, you guys okay?" Hank asked.
"We're fine here," Lisa said. "Can't say the same for Jorge."
"Who?" Dwayne asked.
"One of your teammates," Lisa replied.
"Tempest Wing!!" "Silent Symphony!!" The two wind attacks collided into Aquilamon in a pincer attack. Holsmon and Harpymon floated at the same altitude as Aquilamon, surrounding the eagle digimon.
"What's wrong with him?" Rita asked.
"I don't know. He just freaked out after his partner took Revolmon's attack," Jorge's sister remarked. Rita looked around and saw a Boarmon lying on the ground, not moving.
"Curse..."
"Shit, I forgot about Rocky," Rick remarked, preparing to pick Jorge up and run.
"Meteor Wing!!" "Holy Shot!!" Several fireballs and a ball of energy rained down on Golemon. Golemon appeared unscathed when the cloud of dust that formed faded.
"Forget us?" Clint asked from his seat on Unimon's back.
"I find that hard to believe," Bobby remarked from hanging onto Birdramon's talon. Their digimon finally landed to let the two boys off and returned to the air, and circled above Golemon.
"We've got the upper hand, now," Richard said. "Now, would be as good a time as any to wipe them out."
"Esgrima," another voice said. several claw like blades shot towards Rick and Jorge. Jorge didn't move, still in his trance. Rick tried to get the boy to move, but failed to do so.
Bobby stepped in between the blades and the two boys. The attack just ripped straight through Bobby's body. Bobby fell into a mess of blood flesh and bones as the claws retracted.
"Humans are so messy, when they're killed." Everyone turned their attention towards the source of the voice. The voice's owner was a humanoid digimon that appeared to have both dragon and insectoid traits. "Pail Dramon!!" the 4 enemy digimon said in relief. Victoria and Rita looked like they were about to be sick. Richard, Dwayne, and Clint just stared in disbelief. Just like that, one of their allies was killed. Jorge didn't pay any attention to what just happened.
Birdramon reverted to child form as a result of Bobby being killed like that. "Not again..." Piyomon muttered, inaudible to the others.
Could this be the reason why we were selected? Dwayne asked himself.
"Oh, great. A Perfect," Hank muttered.
"What should we do, now?" Richard asked, slightly nervous over what just happened, but he dulled his feelings enough to know that getting out of their predicament was priority.
"Leave Pail Dramon to me. Just make sure these guys don't try anything."
"Guardromon, Super evolve!!"
The android digimon was engulfed in light as he began to evolve once more.
"Hold yer horses," Pail Dramon remarked. He took aim at the evolving digimon. "Desperado Blaster!!" Pail Dramon fired off a barrage of energy blasts, Guardromon took the hit and reverted to his child form. Kokuwamon just stood where he fell, too tired to continue.
"So much for taking Pail Dramon," Dwayne remarked.
"Anymore bright ideas?" Richard asked Hank.
"Wolf Claw!!" A large white were-wolf like digimon, wearing a full Native American headdress and closthing jumped out of hiding and was jumping straight at Pail Dramon, his claws slashing into Pail Dramon.
"It's a Were Garurumon," Jessica said. "But what's with the Indian outfit?"
"Everyone, get out of here," Were Garurumon said. "I'll hold them off."
"You heard him guys, let's get out of here," Hank said.
"C'mon, Jorge," Rick said. "Grab your partner and let's go."
"But...Boarmon...dead..." Jorge muttered.
"What are you talking about? Boarmon's not dead," Rick told him.
"What?" Jorge asked.
"You heard me, Boarmon isn't dead," Rick said as he picked up Pico Deviemon. "Trust me, you'd know it if he was."
Jorge just nodded and ran off, seeing Boarmon finally devolve. He picked up Tapirmon and followed the others, with Rick close behind.
"How do you expect to keep us from following them?" Pail Dramon asked, recovering from Were Garurumon's first attack.
Were Garurumon started to chant something that sounded like it was in a Native American language. As he continued the chant, several howls were heard around the group. Several ghostly white Garurumon surrounded the gang when Were Garurumon finished.
"Ummm...I don't like the numbers," Revolmon remarked.
"Retreat!!" Pail Dramon yelled, as the gang ran off in their own ways.
"Hey, Jorge," Rick walked over to the younger Hispanic boy, who was tending to his fallen partner.
"What?" Jorge responded.
"I'm just curious as to something. You freaked out when you saw Tapirmon take a hit. Are you okay?" Rick asked.
"I'll be fine," Jorge replied, coldly.
"You don't seem to be," Rick remarked. "You're just keeping it all in. What's wrong?"
Jorge was silent for a while, and that silence lasted for a few seconds before he responded. "I don't really want to talk about it."
Rick nodded in understanding. Then, he pulled out some sort of paper and wrote something on it. "If you feel like just talking or something," Rick said, then handed Jorge the paper. "Here's my e-mail address and IM information. I'll at least be willing to listen."
Jorge took the paper and looked at it, then folded and pocketed it. "Thanks," Jorge said.
"By the way," Lisa piped up. "How'd you know where to find us? Let alone that we were in trouble."
"Would you believe that something put an image in my head?" Dwayne asked in response. As crazy as it seemed, everyone agreed with Dwayne.
"That would be my fault," Were Garurumon said as he approached the group. "I needed a way to contact you to get help here, especially since it would take a lot more than those 4 to beat Pail Dramon's best men."
Jorge noticed some of the emotions from the San Antonio members. The rest of the San Antonio team looked down, getting a depressed look on their faces. Jorge had a bad feeling about what happened. However, he never noticed how the Oklahoma team's faces never changed. It was as if they were used to this happening. Maybe several others have died as well.
"Why are the newbies looking so glum?" Bobby asked, as he walked up to the group, with Piyomon in tow.
"Bobby!!" Clint said in surprise. The San Antonio team, minus Jorge, looked like they had seen a ghost. However, Bobby was standing before them as if nothing happened, the only evidence was his torn and blood-stained clothing.
"What took you so long?" Lisa asked.
"Ummm...it's a long story, but let's just say, I had a long string of bad luck," Bobby tried to explain.
"We'll give them the explanations later," Hank muttered. "We'll meet soon, probably set up a chat room discussion or something so we don't have to leave home, okay? This has been a hard day, and I'm for one looking to get home."
"I'll have to agree," Jorge said, then he muttered under his breath, "For once..."
