Sage sat patiently on his bed, waiting. His heart ached from the scene earlier. He bumped into Rowen in town, but he wasn't alone. He was with an attractive older man, with dark eyes and hair so fine and pale, it looked like spun silver. Introductions were made, and even though Rowen's friend was polite enough, Sage found himself despising him. He felt hostile jealousy toward him, and felt angry at himself. He knew he should have told Rowen how he felt weeks ago, when just the two of them went to the beach.
Desperate for changing
Starving for truth
Closer to where I started
Chasing after you
Sage just stared at the vacant bed across from his, half anticipating, half dreading when his room mate would return. He didn't have to anticipate anymore, at least, as Rowen walked into the dim room.
"Sage? Why are you sittin' in here in the dark?" He flipped the light switch on. He immediately saw the pained expression on Sage's face, and rushed over to his side.
"What's wrong?"
Sage just looked into his eyes. He wanted to tell him so badly, but he was so certain it would only jeopardize their friendship-maybe end it altogether.
"Sage? Please talk to me..."
Sage blinked a long hard blink, and sighed. He wantedto tell him so badly, and he knew that if he didn't, he would be alone, and his heart would shrivel and break. If he did tell him, he may still shatter like a porcelin doll dashed to the floor. But at least he would know.
I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you
He opened his eyes to the sweet innocence on Rowen's face.It always amazed him how no matter what, he always managed to take his breath away. As Rowen took a seat beside him, with a worried look written heavily on his face, Sage took his hands in his own, and took a shaky breath.
"There's something I need to tell you...but I'm not surehow to say it, or how you'll react..." Rowen looked confusedly into his amethyst eyes and nodded uncertainly.
"You see, for a long time now...Well it's just that I...I..."Rowen listened patiently and leaned forward to prompt speech. "I don't know if I can do this."
"Well, just try. Just say exactly what's on your mind."
"But what if I say somwthing I regret?"
"What if you regret never saying anything at all?"
Sage smiled at him. His best friend, was as intelligent as he was as he was beautiful. Sage sought a shred of courage from within himself before he stood up and began pacing. Rowen leaned back on his elbows and rolled his eyes.
"You know, if you want to spend a year thinking this over, maybe I could go get something to eat while I wait." Rowen smiled teasingly, knowing the stress Sage felt, as visible worry lines etched themselves onto his pale face. He couldn't imagine what had his best friend so upset.
Sage stood in the doorway, facing Rowen. "I love you."
Forgetting all I'm leaving
Completely incomplete
I'll take your invitation
You take all of me
Rowen stared at him, speachless. "Uh...Um...y-you wh-what?"
Sage rushed to the bed and held onto Rowen's shoulders as he rose from the bed. "When I saw you today...I've wanted to tell you for solong, but..."
"B-but what?" Rowen whispered, shocked.
"I...I'm not the easiest person to get close to. And I wasn't sure...I didn't know if you could ever feel about me the way I feel about you. But I had to try. Please, Rowen. My heart is in your hands.Don't crush it..."
Tears welled up in Sage's eyes as no other look but shock made it's way across Rowen's face. Rowen wracked his brain for the words he wanted to voice, but nothing would come. Sage's look of hope turned to that of worry, then to heartbreak.
"Sage...you...you. I don't know what to say." Sage pulled him closer, shaking him, but not violently-more urgently.
"Say something. Anything. Just don't stare at me likethat."
Rowen looked him in the eyes, searching his soul, and his own.
"If I'd known you felt this way..."
"What? You'd have left me long ago?" Sage asked quietly as tears began spilling from his eyes. Rowen reached up and wiped the tears away with a gentle hand. "I'd have told you that I felt the same."
I'm living for the only thing I know
I'm running not quite sure where to go
I don't know what I'm diving into
I'm hanging by a moment here with you
Sage broke down and leaned into a kiss that would sink the Titanic. Slowly, without parting lips, they made their way over to Sage's bed.'God...his lips are even softer than I'd dreamed. If I'd known his mouth was this sweet, I'd have told him a much longer time ago.'
There is nothing else to lose
There is nothing else to find
There is nothing in the world
That could make me change my mind
The rising dawn spilled over two bodies tangled in white sheets and each other's arms. Rowen snored softly, his head on Sage's chest,as Sage slowly ran his hands through the indigo hair. He leaned up and kissed the top oh his head, waking him. There was a comfortable moment of silence before either spoke.
"This is just the beginning. There are going to be harder aspects about 'us'." Rowen nodded.
"We'll have each other to carry us through." Rowen smiled and started humming the theme song to friends as Sage laughed.
There is nothing else
