Who is lain?
What is serial experiments lain?
Why don't we ask her ?. . .wait, she's deleted herself, damn . .but here's my synopsis anyway, K? ^_^
Hmmmm . . . that's a really good question. It's hard to explain the phenomena that is serial experiments lain if you haven't seen any of it. It's even worse if you have only seen it in parts. (the missing links/ connections in lain mess with your head . . .if you don't finish it- (seriously speaking from first hand experience), unless of course, you have no imagination at all)
But lets say you haven't seen it and you'd like a review? Right. It is a sci-fi, techno, mind-warping anime. One of the more hard-core of any you've seen. I'd rank this one along with Akira (only not nearly as violent: lain is rated 16 and up, not R) and Ghost in The Shell. You'll find no slap-stick, sweat-dropping fun in this one. lain starts out wierd and stays that way.
It's the story of a shy, apparently "normal" school girl, in a world where everyone depends on and uses computers, or "navi"s to communicate. Like I said, this is no cute fuzzy little anime, tradgedy strikes from the very start. A week after a girl commits suicide, people(including computer impaired lain herself) start receiving e-mail from the dead girl. With that, lain tumbles down the rabbit hole, and it's hard to tell what's reality or if she's hallucinating(trust me, she's not). Lain connects to the wired world, another dimension(or the internet, as we like to call it), to find out why a number of tradgedies take place. As she does, the boundary between the real world and the wired world begins to become less and less clear. And as she continues to unfold the mystery, she takes you with it. Serial Experiments lain seriously warps your mind. This mind warping continues up to a high fever pitch, finally letting you go in a satisfying ending. Sweet. This is the greatest anime I've ever seen(and i've seen A LOT)!
Why is she the focal point of all this? I don't want to spoil it, but it's really great!
(If you've already seen it and are quite confused, click here.)
Note: it's only 4 dvd's/vhs tapes, consisting of 13 episodes in total. The DVD version includes subs/dubs, trailers for music in lain, and even conceptual drawings! Don't forget the adorable lain lunchbox it comes with if you buy the DVDs in a box set. WHEE! Enjoy people, but don't blame me if you can't figure it out or if your mind turns into brain poopy, i'm trying!
