The 3rd Annual Willem Wijnberg Cancer Fundraiser This Fundraiser is now closed, for the most amazing results <click here> All of the Items for this Very Special Fundraiser were created and donated by Willem Wijnberg, a very talented artist from The Netherlands. To see more of Willem's work and past contributions to Fundraisers to fight cancer: <click here> "The laboratory of Dr. Elaine Ostrander and colleagues (Dr. Heidi Parker and Dr. Nate Sutter) of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is conducting a study of Malignant Histiocytosis (MH) in Bernese Mountain Dogs. The goal of this study team is to find variation in genes associated with MH. Recent advances with the canine genome project have facilitated the mapping of canine diseases and we are building upon these resources and successes to try and identify the MH gene in the BMD. In addition and working independently, the laboratories of Drs. Catherine André, Francis Galibert and Benoit Hédan of the CNRS / Medical University at Rennes in France have also been studying MH in BMD's and have collected a single large family with a large number of affected individuals, with great help of the French BMD club (AFBS). Since we wish to find the MH genes as quickly as possible, the laboratories of Dr. Elaine Ostrander in the U.S. and Drs. Catherine André, Francis Galibert and Benoit Hédan of the CNRS / Medical University at Rennes in France have been recently funded by the AKC-CHF to collaborate on this extraordinary project. This offers an exciting opportunity for a group of long term colleagues and friends who have collaborated many times in the past to work together again to pool our resources and talents to expedite the search for the MH gene." Well, as you will see we have gone past that amount!!!! From Joye, 9th March '05 I have just finished preparing all of the checks and the Excel Spreadsheet to send to Erica Werne, Grants Director of the AKC Canine Health Foundation from our recent 2005 Willem Wijnberg Cancer Fundraiser. I have checks totalling $26,290.12. I am still awaiting checks for pledges people made for an additonal $530, which would give us a total of $26,820.12. This is an astonishing amount of money that everyone contributed to help fight malignant histiocytosis in Berners. Here is how the money will be distributed: Grant #336 - "Elaine Ostrander, PhD ~ This grant needed $17,500 to be fully fund with a 3 to 1 match, adding $52,500 for a total of $70,000. Grant #2667 - "Matthew Breen, PhD ~ This grant needed $2,000 to be fully funded with a 1 to 1 match, adding another $2,000 for a total of $4,000 Grant #2646 - "Cheryl London, DVM, PhD ~ This grant needed $5,000 to be fully funded with a 1 to 1 match, adding another $5,000 for a total of $10,000 To fully fund these three grants we have donated $24,500 with matches of $66,500 for a total of $90,500! This leaves an additional $2,290.12, plus the pledges of $530, which will be used to establish a "Berner Lovers" Donor Advised Fund for future Bernese Mountain Dog research. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU EVERYONE! |

Berner-Garde Database Challenge Our two donors (One anonymous and Val Taylor-Wood and Phil Harfoot from the U.K.) have pledged to donate $5 and the AKC CHF will match that with $15 more, for EVERY documentation of cause and date of death in the Berner-Garde Database. If you have already entered the cause and date of death into the Berner-Garde Database, just dig through your records to find or get your vet's diagnosis and either scan and e-mail it to Maria Crifasi mcrifasi@starpower.net ~ or you can fax it or snail mail it to her. If you have never entered your present and past Berners into the Berner-Garde Database, now is the time to do it!! If we can get 77 people to send Maria Crifasi the documentation for cause and date of death for the Berner-Garde Database, we will get $385 from the donors and an additional $1,155 from the AKC CHF Match, giving us a total of $1,540. This challenge is still active!!! Here is the url for the Berner-Garde web site: http://www.bernergarde.org/ WE NEED PEOPLE TO SUPPORT THIS CHALLENGE BY DOCUMENTING THE CAUSE AND DATE OF DEATH FOR THEIR BERNERS IN THE BERNER-GARDE DATABASE. PLEASE go through your records and find the diagnosis of your Berners at the Rainbow Bridge's death or the pathology report. You will be honoring their memory by supporting the Berner-Garde Database Challenge and you will be helping the future Berners because not only will we be adding vital information to the Berner-Garde Database, but you will be helping us earn more money to fight Malignant Histiocytosis in our breed. It's easy to help - please take the time to help our Berners...... |
