In Loving
Memory of Bernese Mountain Dog
Kristie Lost to Malignant Histiocytosis, 6/9/05 shortly before her 10th birthday. So much missed by Kathie Meier and Family From Kathie Meier "Kristie died on June 9, 2005, 5 days before her 10th birthday and each day of those 10 years was a blessing with this special companion. She had a sweetness that radiated to all who met her. She was a working dog in every way participating in six to eight therapy dog activities each month. She likes nothing better than spending a morning or afternoon with a group of pre-school or grade school students helping them to learn about animal safety and dog bite prevention, with a group of disadvantaged youth teaching them about kindness and compassion, or having young students learn how to train a dog with positive reinforcement in the MHS summer camp programs. She worked with several autistic and developmentally disabled students on a regular basis and and watched them show great strides in their speech development as they learned the commands and put her through various obedience routines. In January 2005 she began work as a "reading dog" going bi-weekly to a local school where the kids would read to her. When she was not working her favorite pass time continued to be seeking out the nearest pair of knees to lean against. She made my life so much richer and I savor every day I had with her. I feel fortunate that I had Kristie for three months after her diagnosis with malignant histiocytosis and she was feeling well most of that time. She made her last visit at the reading program on June 2nd. We were able to participate in two of the histiocytosis studies and I hope they will yield a greater understanding of this horrible disease." |
