We had to say goodbye to our Billie on Monday, Dec. 1st. She left us peacefully here at home, surrounded by love and with Billie Holiday songs playing in the background. She was on this earth for 14 years, 8 months and 1 day. A few knew her even before that, when she was just a twinkle in Ella’s and our eyes. Many knew her from the day she was born, and most knew her for thousands of those precious days. Jim and I are sad beyond words. We never thought losing her would be easy, but we thought it would be a little gentler on us this time because of the long and wonderful life that she had. But we were wrong. I feel a bit lost right now, as I’ve never been without a girl Berner in the house. I do love my boys, but my strong and independent girls were a dependable part of my life. Billie stepped up when Ella left us, and now ... It’s fitting that Billie made it through Thanksgiving, as we had so much to be thankful for with her. We had more time with her than any other Berner in our lives. We had more grand adventures than most ever get to have with their dogs. We were constantly amazed by her strength, her perseverance, and her intelligence. Her ability to always come back strong from any setback gave her the tagline “Billie’s bounce!” Of course, it was true in more ways than one. And she had so many friends and admirers rooting her on from around the world. It was never easy announcing her latest milestone birthday or accepting another “seniors” award when so many others were sharing sad news about their loses. But my wish was that Billie’s journey would give everyone a ray of hope for their own Berners. The soggy weather here may be helping the drought but it isn’t helping my spirits. We're still waiting for the Alpenhorn issue, and we made it thru our own club’s veterans parade last weekend. But every day is better as we work on our "new normal" here at home. But I want to thank everyone who has shown their love for Billie over the years, and to everyone who has supported us on her amazing journey. One that was so much more than just a monumental number: 462,931,200 seconds 7,715,520 minutes 128,592 hours 5,358 days ... Today (and everyday) we celebrated our "gift from God" with 13-year-old Billie and her sister Vesta! "On April 28th, she will walk with the memory of their sister Carly who died at 8-1/2, her brother Sonny who died at 9-1/4, her brother Aspen who died at 9-1/2, and her brother Hobie who died at 11. Though they all qualified as "old dogs" for a Bernese, they still died too soon. Billie is a mast cell cancer survivor who is making the most of every minute she has left with us! Her mom, Ella, was a lymphoma survivor who made it to almost-13 before she left us in 2007. So within the sorrow there is also hope. In honor of these girls ability to beat the sad odds that cancer has brought upon the canine world, please join us in supporting the Morris Animal Foundation's Canine Cancer Campaign by making a donation of $13 or more to make all of our dogs' futures a little bit brighter."
