Hotohori is the emperor of Konan country and one of its seishi. He
is the second Suzaku seishi to appear to Miaka. He is the narcissistic
and beautiful emperor who gets mistaken for a woman more than once but
he will take it as a compliment because he is vain. The story of his life
was that he was a puppet in a power struggle in his family. His mother
was the second mother of the Emperor and she pushed him to become the next
emperor. She died shortly after Hotohori was made Emperor at age 14, leaving
him alone to face the others and shoulder the responsibility of running
a country. The family wouldn't harm him because he is a seishi and therefore
must be protected for when the Suzaku no miko comes.
When Hotohori
learns about the legend, he loves it because he feels that the miko will
come from another world to rescue the country and him and freeing hi of
his loneliness. When Miaka appears, he falls in love with Miaka and even
proposes
to her but Miaka refused for she loved Tamahome even though he was evil
at that time. Hotohori is hurt by her decision but sees their love for
each other is true and they will be happy so he stops getting in their
way.
Instead, he
moves on and marries a woman name Houki and has a son named Boushin. Boushin
was not born at the end of the Fushigi Yuugi series but is two years old
in the OVAS. *Ain't he cute? * He holds the same teddy bear Miaka gave
Hotohori before they left for Hokkan country for the first Shinzaho.
Hotohori is
still 18 because he died near the end but comes back as a ghost and dead
people don't age.
