Mythology: Sailor Saturn was the Greek Titan Cronus. Cronus was the father of time, but in the Greek mythology Saturn or Cronus. He was the keeper of time and he was a very cruel Titan who betrayed his father Uranus to become the ruler of the Gods. When Cronus ruled the earth was a terrible place. So in the mythology, Pluto was the keeper of Death and Saturn was the keeper of time but that got switched around in Sailor Moon. Saturn is considered the Roman God of Agriculture and Vegetation.

After a lab accident where she was killed at maybe age 4, her father agreed to sell his soul to bring Hotaru back to life. But then the bad guy who did this started to take over Hotaru too! Her mother died when she was young so she grew up being raised by her father, Souichi Tomoe and his assistants, Kaolinite (Yes, the bad guys). However, she didn't know all about her father's extracurricular activities of trying to destroy the planet.
On top of this, Hotaru didn't have any friends until she met Chibi-Usa (Rini). This was because she once used her healing powers in public to help someone, but then everybody thought she was weird and stayed away from her. However, when Hotaru told her this, Chibi-Usa thought that was an amazing power and was impressed with Hotaru.

Chibi-Usa introduced Hotaru to Usagi (Serena), who treated Hotaru the way she would treat anyone. So they became friends too. Usagi helped Chibiusa make Hotaru feel better by trying to include Hotaru in all thier activites. Before she met Chibiusa, Hotaru was lonely and had low self esteem. If not for Chibiusa, she probably would have let Mistress 9 take her over completely. When Hotaru was taken over by Mistress 9, Uranus and Neptune wanted to destroy her to save the world. But Super Sailor Moon kept stopping them because she believed Hotaru was still alive and was being used. During the battle, Chibi-Usa's friendship and her father's love for her gave her the strength to destroy Mistress 9 from possessing her body. She vanished only to reappear as Sailor Saturn.

Sailor Saturn explained to Sailor Moon that, in order to destroy Pharoah 90, she would use her "Silence Glaive Surprise" attack. The speech she gives is very sad, whether it's the dub or the original. However, this attack was so powerful that she would kill herself in the process. She is definitely the most powerful Sailor. As the battle went on, Sailor Moon turned Super after all the other Sailor Soldiers gave her some of their power and she saved Sailor Saturn from death and Hotaru was reborn as a tiny infant.

Like the rest of the Outer Senshi, Hotaru disappeared during the fourth season. Then she reappeared when Setsuna picked her up from her father. When the Outer Senshi were being threatened by bad guys, Hotaru's power "re-emerged," and she started rapidly aging. Supposedly she was aging to her age in Sailor Moon S, but most people agree that she appears to have grown to Chibiusa's age because she looked very young and height-wise. Anyway, Hotaru also granted the Super upgrade to the Outer Senshi. At this point we see that Hotaru is living with Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna in the same house. In the battle with Nephrenia, Saturn almost used her "Silence Glaive Surprise" to defeat Nephrenia. But Sailor Chibi Moon stopped her and told her to keep believing in Sailor Moon.

After Nephrenia was defeated, she promptly disappeared again. She didn't reappear until the end of the fifth season. Unfortunately, we never get to see Sailor Saturn transform in the anime and I never seen her transformation pen either. That might be shown in the manga but I never seen the manga so sorry.

About the transformation sequence:

First of all, I never saw one myself and that may be because there probably wasn't a real need to create a transformation scene in Sailor Moon since Sailor Saturn was only in the anime series for about less than 10 episodes. They always just show her there, transformed already. Arghs!

However, I found this website that has a tranformation scene for Sailor Saturn. It is very short and I emailed the web creator to ask about the validity of it and she said she saw one in Sailor Stars somewhere and she converted it for her webpage. You can see it here. But if you watch carefully, Sailor Saturn does not have a henhin pen. Like many fans, I made up my own for my own fanfiction....

Death Reborn Revolution!
Sailor Saturn says this to create a huge blast from her Glaive (the staff that she carries). It's known as "unleashing the power of death," and it's so powerful that if Saturn actually used the full attack, she would get killed in the process.

Sailor Stars

Silence Glaive Surprise!
Saturn uses her glaive to gather energy and then she raises it up high and everything goes silent as she slices down her opponent. I'm kinda confused on this but I think this is the same thing as Death Reborn Revolution but in a different name and weaker so it doesn't destroy the world.

Silent (Silence) Wall!
This is probably Saturn's only defensive power. It involves her blocking an attack using her Glaive. She only used it twice... she used it to save Mamoru from Nephrenia's blast, and she used it to save the Sailors from Galaxia's blast.

Voice Actoress/Seiyuu

In Japan, Hotaru's voice is done by Minaguchi Yuko. Yuko is very active in voice acting today, and has participated in popular titles like Neon Genesis Evangelion (Asuka), Yawara! (Yawara), Dragon Ball GT (Pan), and Wedding Peach (Angel Daisy). Yuko is also a pretty good singer.
