There was a full moon out that night. Duo walked slowly down the empty sidewalk
with his hands in his pockets and a frustrated looked on his face.
Absentmindedly, he began to kick a small stone with his left foot watching it
disinterested as it rolled straight away from him before teetering to the side
of the sidewalk. Without even glancing at his watch, Duo figured it was probably
near midnight now. He gave a sigh and slowed his pace down even more. After all,
there was no reason for him to hurry home since Hilde was angry with him. He
might as well wait until he was sure she was completely asleep before going back
at least.
With no where to go, he walked a few more steps before finally plopping down on
the curb next to a streetlight. He laid his arms back against the concrete
behind him and placed his head in his hands so he could stare up at the sky. He
stretched his legs out and crossed his right one over his left. Feeling a little
better, he relaxed some and watched the stars for a little while.
Ever since he had spent his first night on Earth, Duo loved gazing at the stars.
They just seemed so different from the Earth as they had looked on the colonies
and the moon seemed so much smaller, almost as if he could fit it in the palm of
his hand. He smiled to himself and took a deep breathe of the cool night air.
Suddenly a noise caught Duo’s ear. He took his hands out from under his head and
sat up quickly. He fought the immediate urge to reach for his gun and instead,
drew in a breath and stiffened. He got up from the sidewalk and paused,
listening intently to the night sounds.
At first he heard nothing except a few stray chirps of crickets here and there,
but after he had sat there for a while, straining his ears, it came again. It
was so far away, he could barely make it out.
Curious, he at once headed towards the sound, laying his hand reassuringly on
his side where his gun was hidden just in case. He got off the sidewalk and
headed towards a clump of trees illuminated by the moonlight. Slowly the voice
became more distinct. It was a person singing.
//We both know that I shouldn't be here
This is wrong---//
Duo’s eyes widened as he got nearer. Wait a second, he knew that voice! That
voice sounded like….
//And baby it's killing me, it's killing you—//
Duo scrambled inside the forest and looked around quickly.
//Both of us trying to be strong
I've got somewhere else to be
Promises to keep---//
In the moonlight, the silhouette of a boy and a girl was outlined. The girl was
sitting on a bench and the boy standing in front of her, caressing her hand.
Trying to remain silent, Duo crept closer to the couple until he was near enough
to see everything that was going on.
//Someone else who loves me
And trusts me fast asleep
I've made up my mind
There is no turning back
She's been good to me
And she deserves better than that---//
Duo pocked his head through some branches and watched the two with growing
amazement. A wicked smile of delight spread over his face. ‘Well would you look
at that!’
Heero’s voice grew louder. He knelt down at Relena’s feet and stretched his hand
out towards her while clinching his chest with his other.
//It's the hardest thing
I'll ever have to do
To look you in the eye
And tell you I don't love you//
A funny feeling rose in Duo's chest as he watched Heero sing. He ducked back
behind a tree quickly, choking back the sudden great urge to laugh. In haste, he
stuffed his knuckles into his mouth to keep silent as Heero continued to sing.
//It's the hardest thing
I'll ever have to lie
To show no emotion
When you start to cry
I can't let you see
What you mean to me
When my hands are tied
And my hearts not free
We're not meant to be//
"Oh Heero," Relena sighed in delight reaching out her arms and leaning over to
kiss Heero, but he drew back out of her grasp with smile and continued to sing,
his voice deepening in solemn emotion.
//It's the hardest thing
I'll ever had to do
To turn around and walk away
Pretending I don't love you
I know that we'll meet again
Fate has a place and time
So you can get on with your life
I've got to be cruel to be kind
Like Dr. Zhivago---//
Holding his sides in pain to keep from bursting into hysterical laughter, Duo
stopped for a second, confused. ‘Who the hell is Dr. Zhivago?’ He wondered to
himself. He shrugged his question off and resumed his restrained laughter.
//All my love I'll be sending
And you will never know
There can be no happy ending---//
Duo felt like he was about to die. He let out short shallow breaths while
snorting softly through his nose in his attempts to keep calm.
Heero sung the chorus to the song one more time. He began to sway his hips in
time with the music while beckoning Relena to come to him. She got up and came
over at once.
//Maybe another time, another day
As much as I want to, I can't stay---//
They met together and intertwined their fingers with each other’s while placing
their other hands around one another's neck and waist. Snuggling close, they
began to dance slowly in the circle of the trees lit up by the moonlight
streaming through the tops.
//I've made up my mind
There is no turning back
She's been good to me
And she deserves better than that---//
Heero softly whispered the chorus one more time in Relena’s ear.
This was starting to get interesting to Duo. He leaned heavily against a tree
branch in front of him, trying to hear better.
As they neared the end of the song, Relena’s and Heero’s bodies came a lot
closer. Their faces edged closer to one another’s and they began to slow down
their dance.
//I don't want to live a lie---//
They stopped completely and just stared at each other for a while. Duo pressed
himself even more against the branch, trying his hardest to hear the rest.
Heero took Relena’s chin softly in his and pulled her face up to meet his eyes.
In a hushed voice he whispered. "What can I do?" He tilted his head and slowly
met Relena’s lips with his own in a kiss.
‘Oh my God!’ Duo thought to himself in astonishment, staring open-mouthed at the
two. ‘He finally did it! The crazy Son of a Bitch did it!’
Relena leaned forward and wrapped her arms lightly around Heero’s neck,
deepening the kiss. A soft moan escaped from her throat.
Duo leaned a little farther in to get a better look. ‘Damn this branch! If only
it would-‘
CRACK!
‘Uh-oh!’ Suddenly, the tree branch he was leaning against gave way from beneath
him. Frantically he tried to grip something to keep from falling but was only
able to grab a few leaves from above him.
He gave a yelp of alarm as he tripped and tumbled down. Falling into a barrel
roll, he flew from his hiding spot under the startled lovers feet.
"UMPH!" He came to an abrupt halt and raised himself up quickly from his current
face-down position. As he looked up, his eyes met two cold, very angry eyes
staring back at him. A scared chill spread down his spine as he took in the
whole situation. He gulped. "Uh, hi?" he said uneasily.
A familiar ‘click’ sounded in the dark. Duo knew that sound from anywhere. That
was the sound of a very pissed Heero taking his gun off safety.
Panic swept over Duo as he crawled back away from Heero, managing to scramble to
his feet. "Now Heero," he began, holding his hand up in a motion of surrender.
"Don’t do anything foolish. Just give me a chance to explain."
"You have until the count of ten," Heero said coolly.
Duo cast a pleading glance at Relena, but she was just as angry as Heero.
"One." Heero raised his gun towards Duo’s head. "Two."
Duo turned tail and ran away as quickly as he could.
"Three…Four…..Five….TEN!"
Heero shot six consecutive bullets at the fleeing spy, making sure that each one
barely missed him. A frightened yelp echoed through the night as Duo sprinted,
horrified towards the only safe place he could think of….
"HILDEEEEE!"
