Episode 11: In the Still Darkness
Extended: Aoba is getting a drink from a vending machine outside a Laundromat. Maya and Ritsuko are inside. The three of them get on a train and see Fuyutsuki. He says he is going to represent Ikari uptown at the city council meeting. The elections are coming up but he says they have no authority anyway. The government is run by the Magi supercomputers and just goes along with its decisions. Fuyutsuki asks about the experiment Ritsuko is to perform. She says it is the prolonged Eva activation test. He says he'll expect good news. Lights are flashing emergency when Ritsuko orders the test aborted. After taking a look at the data and making adjustments they are going to start the experiment over again. Misato is in an elevator and hears Kaji yell to hold it. He gets his hand in just in time to stop it. Shinji is on the phone with his father. He says that he is supposed to tell his parents about an interview for advanced vocational education. He says he has given all of those duties to Misato Katsuragi. He tells him not to bother him with such nonsense. The elevator stops and all main power goes out. It is a main power shutdown. Misato in the elevator says the backup should switch on. Aoba reports to Fuyutsuki that the backup circuits aren't working. He says to focus all power to maintain Magi and central Dogma. Hyuga was waiting for Misato to pick up her laundry from him when he noticed the power outage. Shinji swipes his card to enter but nothing happens. Each of the three pilots try without success. Ritsuko and Maya walk out the test facility door. At different places the possibilities are being discussed, it is impossible for all three back up circuits to fail at once, which means someone caused it to happen. Fuyutsuki says it would be a disaster if an Angel were to attack. Military personnel detect the unidentified object heading for Tokyo-3 but get no response from the city. Ritsuko and Maya climb up an escape tube and she comments that she never thought they'd be used. Meanwhile the three pilots, determine that none of the facilities work and the phones are down. Rei gets out her emergency manual and says that they are to go to NERV headquarters. Asuka says they have to decide a leader and proclaims herself the one with the best qualifications. Shinji asks how they will open the doors. They will have to be opened manually, Shinji is manually opening a door with a crank and says to Asuka that she wants to be in charge but when the going gets tough she turns to him. Military personnel detect that the Angel is still advancing and decide to fly to Tokyo-3. A helicopter flies over Tokyo-3 announcing that an unidentified object is in the area and that all are to go to the designated evacuation zones. Hyuga says to himself that he has to report to headquarters. A campaigning vehicle with a loud speaker approaches. Misato and Kaji in the elevator, she says it's too hot. Kaji says if she is so hot why doesn't she take her shirt off. Misato puts her jacket back on. Ritsuko and Maya discuss the head and Maya points out that even in the heat the commanders are still cool and in command. Fuyutsuki says it's hot and Gendou responds with a yes. Hyuga is in the campaign vehicle and tells the driver to ram through the barrier. In the command center they discuss that someone caused the blackout intentionally, Ritsuko assumes that it is to figure out NERV's layout by the restoration process. She says she will run a dummy program to make it difficult to get a complete grasp of the layout. Gendou says that mankind's greatest enemy is himself. Shinji asks if they are going the right way because it usually only take two minutes. Asuka says she is sure it is the right way. They hear the loudspeaker and Hyuga announcing to all personnel that there is an Angel approaching. Rei says she knows a shortcut. Asuka tells her to remember that she is the leader and asks where the shortcut is. All three pilots are crawling in a ventilation shaft. Shinji asks what the Angels are, it doesn't make sense, and why they are fighting them. Asuka says that they attacked them. After leaving the vent there are two paths. Rei says to go to the right. Asuka says to the left. Asuka asks what Shinji thinks who says he doesn't know. Asuka says that she's the leader so they can follow her. They get to a door opens it and sees the 9th Angel Matriel. She quickly closes the door and says that now she has visually confirmed the Angel's presence. Hyuga drives into the command center and says that an Angel is approaching. Gendou tells Fuyutsuki to take charge and he is going to prepare the Evas for manual launch. Fuyutsuki asks if it can be done. Gendou says they have a diesel generator for emergencies. Asuka talks to Rei and says that she is Commander Ikari's favorite. She says that Rei, or "Wondergirl" as she calls her, is probably treated differently. She says that she shouldn't act superior. Rei says she doesn't act superior and isn't treated any better. The Evas are ready for manual insertion. The three pilots encounter a block in their path and Rei says they will have to break into another ventilation shaft. Asuka tells Shinji that if she looks up her dress she'll kill him. Shinji then looks up and receives several kicks. He says that he has to look forward to see where he is going. Shinji and Asuka fall out of the shaft. Then Rei lands on her feet. Ritsuko says that the Evas are on standby. Shinji asks how and is told it was done by hand. After the entry plugs are inserted Gendou order the workers to severe the primary hydraulic locks. Next remove all remaining restraints and launch. Hyuga says the Angel stopped directly above them. All three Units are crawling through a shaft. They go out into a large vertical shaft and slowly make their way up. Acid falls and then Unit 2 falls into Unit 0 which falls into Unit 1. Unit 1 soon stops them from falling. They are back in the side shaft and Asuka has an idea. There will be three positions: defense, offense, and backup. Defense will defend offense by neutralizing the A.T. Field and protecting from the acid. Backup will go down the shaft and retrieve a rifle and then give it to offense that will fire a volley destroying the target. Rei says she will take the defensive, but Asuka says she will. Shinji says it's too dangerous. Asuka says that's why and she still owes Shinji from last time. She says Shinji will be offense and Rei backup. Unit 2 goes out into the shaft as acid pours onto it. Unit 0 reaches the bottom of the shaft and throws a rifle to Unit 1. Unit 1 shoots as soon as Unit 2 gets out of the way, destroying the Angel. Misato is still stuck in the elevator and is trying to get out the top while on Kaji's shoulders. The elevator starts and they both fall. The door opens and Ritsuko and Maya are standing outside. The three pilots are sitting atop a hillside looking over the city. Shinji says that it is ironic that without electricity and light the sky is beautiful. Asuka says without light it seems like there are no humans. Rei says man fears the darkness and so he scrapes away at the edges with fire. Shinji asks if that is what makes the Angels attack them. Asuka says who knows what they think. To be continued…
