Episode 2: The Beast
Extended: The 2nd episode starts showing Unit 1. The safety locks are released holding unit 1. Shinji is told to concentrate on walking. He successfully walks a step to the joy of those in command center. On the next step he stumbles and falls flat. The Angel approaches and grabs Unit 1 by the head. It pulls on its arm giving Shinji extreme pain. The arm breaks and hangs limp. The angel grabs Unit 1’s head and pounds it with a “light rod” going through its palm. This cracks the brain case and Unit 1 is pushed into a faraway building. The control nerves break up and there are no life-sign readings on Shinji. At this point Shinji wakes up in a hospital bed. It is a gray morning with animal noises heard outside. Shinji looks up at the “unfamiliar ceiling.” Helicopters fly around, there is a danger sign. A crane is lifting head armor of Unit 1. Gendou is in a meeting with what is revealed as SEELE. They are not in person. They say the investments aren’t a total waste but may be if they don’t pay off. NERV must take steps to control information about the situation and others. Misato watches TV talks with Ritsuko about covering up the truth. Ritsuko says they are all really scared. Back to meeting questions if NERV is efficient enough. The costs are staggering. There are comments about Gendou having his son pilot. They say the Human Enhancement Project is Gendou’s top priority. It is the only hope for mankind. They still may adjust the budget. Gendou is not needed for the rest of the meeting. Head of SEELE says there is no turning back. Gendou replies to himself in the darkness that he knows. Shinji is in a hall, the door opens, Rei is wheeled pass and they make eye contact. Misato and Ritsuko in convoy of trucks and receive news he’s woken up. He doesn’t remember what happened. Ritsuko says not to worry. Meanwhile Shinji sits in a chair staring at his left arm. Crane is moving a giant gun while it shows construction of a “guided weapon systems building.” Giant bullets moving and Misato comments they just might survive. Ritsuko calls her an optimist. Misato approaches Shinji, who is still sitting, and they see Gendou in elevator. Shinji looks away. Shinji and Gendou don’t want to live together. Fuyutsuki comments being apart is natural to them. Living alone is all right with Shinji. He says he is alone anyway. Misato takes Shinji home to live with her. Misato talks to Ritsuko on phone and tells her not to worry she won’t be making any passes at him. Ritsuko is upset. Misato comments she can’t take a joke. Misato says they should have a welcoming party for Shinji. In grocery store Shinji standing with a conversation in the background. It is commented that they never dreamt the city would be a battlefield and there is no guarantee of safety. Misato stops at a view overlooking the city. Watch the buildings rise up from underground “growing.” Misato says the city is a fortress designed to stand against the Angels. Shinji saved the city, Tokyo-3. At the entrance to Misato’s apartment she tells Shinji to come in. Shinji doesn’t want to intrude. It is Shinji’s home now. Shinji walks in “I’m home.” The apartment is a complete mess. There are beer cans and other empty liquor bottles everywhere. She says to put the food in the fridge. In it is ice, snacks, and “50 gallons of beer.” Shinji asks what’s in the other fridge. Misato replies he’s probably sleeping. Shinji looks confused. They start eating. Misato starts drinking beer. All of the food is instant made. Shinji says he’s not used to food like that. Misato asks if he is finicky. Shinji says he’s not. There is a giant pyramid of empty beer cans in the background. They play Rock, Paper, Scissors to split up the chores. Misato says he can take advantage of everything except her. She asks if yes is the only thing he can say. She suggests a bath. Pen Pen walks out and past Shinji. Shinji is dumb-founded. Misato says that he’s a warm water penguin and his other roommate. Misato says to Shinji that he should cover himself. Shinji realizing he is revealed to her is embarrassed and goes to take a bath. Misato thinks she should be nicer but he’s probably already made up his mind about her. Shinji thinks Misato is a nice person, but bad memories find him in the bath. Like his father. And Rei. The scene moves to Ritsuko talking to Gendou about Rei. Rei can work again in 20 days and then they can reactivate Unit 0. Gendou says as long as the children survive, they will pilot. Sign that reads: Shinji’s Lovely Suite. Shinji is in bed listening to musical tape. Shows high school transfer paper. Misato is on the phone and doesn’t think he’ll pilot again. She is ashamed she was just thinking of Shinji as a tool. Shinji is looking up at another unfamiliar ceiling. Mentions the whole city unfamiliar. Asks himself why he is here. Thundering noise. Gets louder. Zoom in on Shinji’s eye. Unit 1 is against a building with extensive damage. Pulses flowing backward and the monitors aren’t reacting. They try to abort, but they can’t eject entry plug. Shows Shinji in Unit 1. Unit 1 reactivates itself and opens it’s mouth, even though there is no mouth. “Berserker.” Unit 1 does a jumping flip kick and lands on the Angel. Angel grabs Unit 1, but Unit 1 kicks off. Unit 1 roars while it charges at Angel. Angel extends A.T. Field (Absolute Terror Field). Unit 1 regenerates its left arm. It rips through the A.T. Field like it wasn’t there and extends it’s own. Unit 1 roars. Angel uses an energy blast against Unit 1 to no effect. Unit 1 grabs the Angel’s arms and rips them off. Unit 1 kicks it into a building. Unit 1 charges after it and starts pounding on KOA (core). Uses part of the Angel to crack it. The Angel grabs Unit 1 and self-destructs. There is a giant cross explosion in the air. Eva is walking in the explosion. It is commented that it is “Eva’s true form” and Gendou smiles. Shinji is in Unit 1 sees the head armor fall off. In reflection of a building he sees a skull and an eye in the skull opens and looks at Shinji. Shinji screams. Back in Shinji’s room Misato opens the door and she tells him he did something good and noble. That he should be proud and hang in there. She closes the door. To be continued…
