Episode 3: The Phone That Never Rings
Extended: This episode starts out with Shinji in unit 1. After being asked how he’s doing by Ritsuko, he says he’s getting used to it. Ritsuko explains about the umbilical cable. It supplies power and if it is cut the battery gives power. It gives 1 minute at full power and 5 at minimal operation mode. Shinji then does target practice where he is told to position the target in the center and pull the switch. Maya asks why he’s piloting again. Ritsuko thinks it’s because he does what he’s told to do. Shinji dully repeats target practice. Shinji wakes Misato but says she doesn’t have to work and let her sleep. She asks Shinji to take out the trash, he does. Misato asks how school is and Shinji says it’s okay. Ritsuko calls Misato and asks how it’s going with Shinji. Misato says after two weeks of school he hasn’t changed. She also thinks he doesn’t have any friends and hasn’t used the cell phone she gave him. Ritsuko talks to Misato about the “Hedgehogs Dilemma.” Which is: Hedgehogs may want to be close, but the closer they get the more they get hurt. Some people are like that and are afraid of being hurt. Misato says he needs to learn that part of growing up means interacting with others while distancing pain. We then see Kensuke playing with his camera and a toy. We learn Toji is not at school. The TV reports no one is injured, but Kensuke believes there had to be injuries. Toji comes into the classroom. He asks where everyone was. Kensuke said they all moved or transferred because of the battle. Toji’s says his little sister was hurt. She was crushed under a pile of debris. Toji calls the pilot of the robot “dumb” and “what did that stupid idiot think he was doing.” Kensuke mentions that there is a new student who transferred in after the robot incident. The teacher lectures that man faced his greatest trial when a meteor from outer space hit the continent of Antarctica melting the ice caps instantly. This created abnormal weather patterns and thousands of flora and fauna and half the world’s population died immediately in the aftermath. Afterwards there were wars and conflicts. Shinji gets a message on his computer “Is it true that you’re a pilot?” Shinji looks around and sees two girls giggling and waving. Another message says, “You are the one right? Y/N.” Shinji types, “YES.” Everyone gets up and crowds around Shinji, except for Toji, Kensuke, Hikari, and Rei. They start asking him multiple questions. Meanwhile the teacher continues that the restoration in 15 years is proof of man’s resilience. Shinji says it’s classified. Teacher turns around and says that is all for today. The bell rings. Moves to outside where Toji punches Shinji. Toji says he’s sorry, but he needed to work off his anger about his sister being injured. Shinji says they “made him pilot the stupid thing.” Toji punches Shinji again. Shinji lies on the ground looking up on the sky. Rei says there’s an emergency and she’ll report first. The alarm sounds. In NERV command center they have sighted the target. They assume battle stations level 1. They prepare for anti-aircraft interception. The buildings are lowered beneath the ground. The civilian evacuation is completed. In evacuation center the TV just has text messages. In command center discussions about the gap between angels was only three weeks. Once again the military is ineffective. Fuyutsuki laughs and says, “It’s a waste of the taxpayers money.” Orders to mobilize Unit 1. The entry plug is inserted. Shinji asks himself why he is piloting again even though his father isn’t there and he was beaten. Toji and Kensuke tell class representative Hikari they have to go to the bathroom. In the bathroom Kensuke says he wants to see the battle. Toji says they could get killed. Kensuke says the risk is the same either way. Kensuke mentions that the new kid pilots the Eva and Toji hit him hard twice. He says if he refuses to fight they could die. Toji agrees. Shinji is ready, he is told to neutralize the A.T. Field and fire. Toji and Kensuke are shown running up the stairs. The 4th Angel rears up, it has a triangular head, tentacles, and it hovers. Toji and Kensuke watch. Unit 1 reaches the surface and spreads it’s A.T. Field. Shinji shoots an extremely large volley and hides the enemy with smoke. Tentacles shoot out from the smoke and break the rifle. A second rifle is sent up. Shinji freezes. Kensuke says that being beaten up must have messed him up. Toji then tells him to shut up. Unit 1 is on the ground. The Angel strikes with its tentacles, but Unit 1 jumps out of the way. Various buildings are destroyed and Unit 1 flies back. The umbilical cable is snapped. Unit 1 switches to its internal battery source. A tentacle grabs Unit 1 by the leg and throws it. It lands right by Toji and Kensuke who are in between Unit 1’s fingers. The Angel hovers above Unit 1. It strikes but Shinji grabs the tentacles. He can’t fight because of Toji and Kensuke. Toji and Kensuke are let into the cockpit and Misato tells Shinji to retreat and start again later. Toji and Kensuke are nerve noise lowering Shinji’s synchronization level. Shinji throws the Angel. Misato tells Shinji to retreat. The armor on the hands of Unit 1 is burnt off. Shinji says he mustn’t run away and engages the progressive knife. Misato tells Shinji to obey her orders. Shinji charges down the mountain. Both tentacles stab through Unit 1’s torso. Shinji then stabs the progressive knife into the Angel’s core. Shinji is screaming. Activation time left 30 seconds. Sparks are flying everywhere as Shinji pushes in the knife. 10 seconds. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Unit 1 shuts down. The “target” is also silent. Raining outside at the school. Toji says it’s been three days since he stopped coming to school. He wonders what he’s been doing. Kensuke asks if he’s worried. Toji denies it and Kensuke says he’s stubborn. Kensuke gives Toji Shinji’s phone number and tells him to call Shinji. Toji is about to call then hangs up the phone. It is still raining outside. To be continued…
