Episode 4: Rain, Escape and Afterwards
Extended: Episode starts out raining, zooms in on Misato’s apartment. Her alarm goes off, wakes up, and brushes her teeth. She goes up to Shinji’s room (sign that says “Shinji’s Lovely Suite” is now heart shaped). Misato talks through the door and says it’ been five days and the Eva is repaired. She opens the door and sees he’s run away. She says she’s not surprised. Toji and Kensuke ring the bell to Misato’s apartment; Misato opens door hoping it is Shinji. They identify themselves and apologize for causing trouble. They say Shinji’s been absent and they’ve been wondering about him. Misato says he’s at the NERV training center. They give Misato Shinji’s work and Misato thanks them and closes the door. Toji comments that she’s a babe. Misato then calls Shinji an “idiot” and “jerk.” Scene moves to Shinji on a monorail listening to his Walkman. Time progresses, everyone leaves, more get on, and leave. Monorail stops at last service station. Shinji says he ought to go back. Shinji walks through the streets and sees a horror movie. Hoboes and a couple making out are the only other ones in the theater. Shinji watches the couple with interest. Next it shows a view of the city and then the clouds. Shinji continues walking, stops. Shinji looks at the clouds, strange noises start, buildings seem to circle him, and Shinji grabs his head and runs. Shows Misato in bed, looks in Shinji’s room, then mutters “idiot.” Shinji walking through fields, then he stands on a mountain looking at the city. Shinji sits by a cliff. Shows examination of Rei. Misato says it seems wrong to use fourteen year olds. Ritsuko says they have to and asks if Shinji has contacted her. Misato says he hasn’t and says it’s probably better. Misato then explains what happened after the last battle. Misato is yelling at Shinji. Asking why he disobeyed her orders. Asking if he knows he’s supposed to obey her orders and then asks if he’s listening. He says yes. She says he will not get out of it by saying yes and although it may seem easy to go along with others an attitude like that in an Eva he will get killed. Shinji says, with a smirk, “I just don’t care anymore.” Misato says it would be nice to say he has the right attitude, but he won’t get any praise from her. Back to present. Misato says if it only means pain he shouldn’t pilot Eva. Ritsuko says they need pilots. Next it moves to Kensuke playing “war” by himself in a field. He sees Shinji walking and calls his name. Shinji and Kensuke sitting by a fire. Kensuke says Toji is sorry and his sister chewed him out. Shinji mentions that Misato said the ecosystem was returning to normal. Kensuke says he envies him; living with Misato and piloting Eva. He says he want to do it. Shinji says his mother will probably worry. He says he doesn’t have one, just like Shinji. Shinji asks if he usually does things like this. Kensuke says he just does it for fun. Morning. NERV personnel from security intelligence surround the tent and ask Shinji to come with them. Scene moves to classroom. Toji upset Kensuke just stood there and asks if he has any balls. Kensuke says, “Balls have nothing to do with it, only and idiot fights when he knows he can’t win. At NERV, in a dark room, where Shinji is Misato opens the door. She says, “Long time no see.” She asks if he feels any better after wandering around for two days. She says the Eva is on standby and asks if he will or won’t pilot. Shinji says, “You’re not going to scold me?” He then says of course not, I’m no relation to you. Shinji asks what they will do if he doesn’t pilot. Misato responds Rei will pilot. Shinji says it seems unrealistic to force everything on her. He then says don’t worry I’ll pilot. Misato says that he doesn’t want to. Shinji says that it doesn’t come naturally to him and mention others. Misato yells for him to stow that line of crap, it has nothing to do with the others. If he doesn’t like it he should go back where he came from. They don’t need someone with an attitude like that piloting. She leaves in anger. Scene then changes to Ristuko, Gendou, and Rei on a conveyor belt. Ritsuko asks if Gendou knows Shinji is leaving tomorrow. Gendou says they will reconfigure Unit 1 for Rei. And, regardless of Unit 0, they will continue experimenting with Unit 1. Ritsuko looks at Rei. Rei sighs. Gendou says the fourth child hasn’t been found yet. Shinji’s NERV card is showed destroyed. He asks where Misato is to say goodbye. Response is that since he is not NERV personnel he can’t be informed. Shinji is about to leave. Toji and Kensuke show up and give him stuff he left behind. Shinji asks people with him for a moment. Toji says he’s sorry and asks Shinji to hit him. Shinji says he can’t. Toji says that otherwise he won’t be satisfied. He then tells Shinji to hurry up. Shinji agrees, but only once. As Shinji is about to hit him Toji yells to wait. He says not to hold back. Shinji punches Toji. Kensuke says that hurt and laughs. Toji says they’ve seen others leave and they will too since Shinji is leaving. He says they can’t blame him, they saw him suffer in the Eva. If anyone blames him he’ll "whop" them on the head. They all say take care. Person says time is up. Shows Shinji walking with personnel up stairs. Shinji runs back and while trying to be pulled back by the personnel yells that he deserved to be hit. He also says he’s a coward, dishonest, sneaky, and a wimp. Kensuke and Toji stand somewhat shocked. Ritsuko and Misato are standing by Unit 1. Ritsuko says he’s gone and asks Misato if it’s for the best. She then says, “Hedgehog’s Dilemma.” She says she now understands that Shinji can’t let others know how he feels. Train coming announcements that it is for government use only. Door opens. Shinji sitting hears Misato say, “Hang in there.” Shinji looks up and gasps. Car drives up to train pulling away. Misato gets out and sighs. Misato looks back and sees Shinji standing there. Shinji looks up and sees Misato. They look at each other for some time. Shinji says, “I’m home.” Misato says, “Welcome home.” To be continued…
