1/31/03 Animenation is now breaking into the anime distribution and translation market with "Omishi Magical Theater: Risky Safety" (Omishi Mahou Gekijou Risky Safety). You can find a press release at animenation.com.

Sony's Astro Boy film will now be entirely CGI instead of a mix of live action and CGI.




1/30/03 I added a Pen Thought to the Pen Penny section and I moved one to Previous Pennys.

I have been asked by a European friend to remind those from that region that End of Evangelion will be released on February 17th.

Capcom has announced that they are developing a Playstation 2 adventure game based on the 3D Gregory Horror Show anime television series. The game will retain the same 3D/claymation look that the TV series used.

Also, Capcom has announced development of a multi-console & PC massively multi-player online RPG sequel to Ghosts'n'Goblins, titled Makimura Online.

1/29/03 The ADV DVDS of Compiler and Suikoden have been delayed indefinitely

Eros Comics has acquired the English version of the Isane Hound adult manga and will be released under the name: Sex Warrior Isane Extreme.

The Tokyo Mint has released a limited edition of 600 statues of Love Hina character Motoko Aoyama, who is dressed in traditional garb and sheathing her sword. The statue is 13" tall, and on a wooden base. The statues will be $139.

The highly anticipated second season of The Big O will debut in Japan on May 23, 2003



1/28/03 First off, a very Very surprise announcement from Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network distributed a press release for Toonami's "Giant Robot Week." This week-long special will include several ADV-licensed shows, including Dai-Guard, Robotech, Martian Successor Nadesico, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Although they only seem to be airing a few episodes of each it makes you wonder if they plan to pick up any of the series. How edited they will be remains to be seen, although Evangelion is definitely adult material and parts will have to be cut out.

Yu Gi Oh will appear on the cover of TV Guide with three different covers for the February 1-7 issue.

Tokypop has also acquired FLCL and Baby Birth mangas.

Giuseppe Albanese has opened his Anime Check-List, a massive work-in-progress database of all anime released since 1917, including television series, OAVs including adult anime OAVs, and movies.

The AniMatrix short film collection will be released on VHS and DVD on June 3rd. Beginning February 4th, four of the 9 AniMatrix shorts will be streamed for free at The AniMatrix.com.




1/27/03 The first DVD volume of the 3 episode Sakura Taisen Ecole de Paris OAV series will debut in Japan on March 19th. This new OAV series marks the first time characters from Sakura Wars 4 will appear in Sakura Wars anime.

Tokyopop has also liscensed Junikyu de Tsukamaete.

MediaBlasters will be releasing Samurai Deeper Kyo, 12 Countries, Madara, Juuni Kokki, Weathering Continent and many Enoki titles like Dante's Inferno.

1/24/03 The RahXephon homepage has opened here.

The double disc special edition American DVD versions of Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky (Laputa) will be released on April 15th.

March 25th the first two volumes of Fist of the North Star will be released with others to follow. On February 25th Manga will release The Guyver on DVD.



1/23/03 New York University is offering a course entitled "Anime" and will explore popularity and cultural conditions of it. New York University's Center for Advanced Digital Applications will offer a class about the look of Japanese animation. Also, the University of Nevada's Division of Educational Outreach will offer a course titled "Introduction to Anime" March 8 and April 26, 2003. The course is open to the public and as its name implies, will be a broad, introductory level discussion of anime and what anime is.

1/16/03 Master Keaton has been delayed until June 10th.

Tokyopop will publish the manga of Battle Royale.

This April Image comics will have what they are calling "manga month." Four new titles will be debuted. They are: The Agents by Ben Dunn and Kevin Gunstone, Heirs of Eternity by Jose Torres, Jae Tsai and Jim Royal, Rotogin: Junkbotz by Jay Lee and J. Korim and Soul of a Samurai by Will Dixon.

Wizard Entertainment, known for the Wizard comic magazine will begin publishing an anime magazine. It will be called Wizard Anime Insider and will be released bi-monthly. Formally called Wizard Anime Invasion the magazine will be released in February.

Read or Die being edited into one feature has now been officially declared false.

According to a report, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky Laputa, and Kiki's Delivery Service will be released as double disc special editions in April.

There will be special editions to all six of the .hack//SIGN DVDs.




1/13/03 Apparently the recent Japanese Playstation releases of Final Fantasy 1 & 2 will be released on a single disc in America under the title "Final Fantasy Origins."

The three episode Read or Die OAV series will be released in America on April 15th, with all three episodes edited together into a single feature.

Coamix has confirmed plans to release a 3 episode OAV series titled "Shin Hokuto no Ken" (New Fist of the North Star) this spring.

Kinji Fukasaku passed away. He was 72 years old. He is best known for Battle Royale and began work on Battle Royale 2, before passing on production to his son a few weeks ago.

On February 1st, .hack//SIGN will debut on Cartoon Network.

ADV is releasing two versions of St. Seiya. One will be bilingual DVD with a dub true to the series. The other will be dubbed for TV and distributed under the name Knights of the Zodiac.

1/10/03 Bandai Entertainment is going to debut "Argetosoma" and "Kikaider" at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention.

Bandai's U.S. toy branch announced they will release toys based off the Zeta Gundam series in 2003.

Star Blazers: Bolar Wars Vol. #1 will be released 01/21/2003.

Pioneer has just launched the official website for Patlabor the Movie 3: WXIII.

Studio Ghibli will issue the first issue of the montly magazine Neppu, coming out January 10th.



1/8/03 For those of you who are confused I actually updated yesterday but apparently it wasn't put up on the site, so I just put it up again today still under yesterday's date. On to the news.

TOKYOPOP has announced new manga titles to be released in America. They are Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star, Shaolin Sisters, and Rebound (sequel to Harlem Beat).

Manga entertainment's Dangaioh will be heavily edited into a TV type movie thing and will only be dubbed along with Bounty Dog.

The fairly new Inuyasha: Sengoku Otogi Gassen fighting game for the PSone will be released in America in March.

Great Dangaioh Vol. #2 has been pushed to a release date of 02/18/2003.

Bandai has opened a new website covering both the Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars TV series.

Spirited Away won the "Best Animated Feature" award by the Online Film Critics Society.




1/6/03 After taking down the previous poll asking if I should do updates over all of anime and manga or just Eva specific, the final results were 100% for updates of all anime and manga. Now I am to forfeit any life I have to you wicked slave drivers if I want to accomplish this. However, considering the lack of any life at this point... I have reluctantly decided to comply. Starting tomorrow I'll update anime and manga news from many sites and companies. Hooray. Any updates to this site will be placed at the beginning of the update with various news and announcements from anime and manga industry following.


1/1/03 Happy New Year everybody. I bring forth updates on this occasion. First off, I added a Pen Thought to the Pen Penny section and I moved one to Previous Pennys. Secondly, I added a review of the third volume of Hellsing to Other Reviews. As usual for the beginning of the month, I moved most of December's updates to Old News. And lastly, I changed the poll asking what your favorite domestically released series of 2002 was. Only the first few volumes were released on several of them, but I gave a couple of choices.
